  • Help with a T20

I got a Hustler for a really good deal but the tranny was apart. I orderd a new seal and gasket kit. Followed the instructions from form (thank you ) but the tranny works the opposite. The right side works correctly but the left side is the opposite. Shift into forward on the left side and I have to pull the lever backwards and it will move forward. Shift into reverse and I push the lever forward and it moves in reverse. The fumes are getting too me but not that bad

    Thanks

It sounds like the diamond shaped shifters might be switched around on the opposite sides. They are specific for the right and specific or the left. Try that and let us know if it works for you. Can you post up some pictures of your Hustler too?

Yes I have tried that. The steer levers are working opposite if that makes sense.

Are you sure that the pin on the bottom of the diamond shifter is in the groove of the shift collar (like on page 10 of the rebuild article)? It's easy to miss it. I would pull it back out just to double (or triple) check.

I have even removed the diamond shifters and moved the gear over with a screwdriver and it still is not correct. I am lost on this one

Is your linkage outside of the T20 set up correctly? ie. when you push your laterals forward, which plunger on the T20 is being pulled out and which one is being pushed in?

Could it be that you have 2 right side shifter diamonds?

Good call, evil! I think you solved the problem. If that is the problem, you can get a new diamond shifter from Recreatives. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

Both are identical pull back on the steer levers and the bottoms pull out and the tops push in push forward on the steer levers and the bottom pull out and the tops push in.

You may have the bands on the left side reversed. If the shift collar in the transmission is moving the right direction and the plungers still work opposite the way they should, the bands are most likely wrong. Don't use it that way, or it'll score up the drums.

Don wins this trivia question, and he's right about driving the machine like that... you'll tear up the bands and drums in a hurry. Hopefully you can correct it before anything happens.

                          T-20 Troubles

Thanks guys for all your advise. I finally found time to work on that tranny, after a graduation , a party and four other kids and fix the Go-kart. I cracked that T-20 and found with my wifes help (I know can you believe it). That I had reversed the bands that is why the left side worked oppisite from the right site. Thanks again for all your help. Yes the Hustler is running and moving great.
