I am trying to decide if I need to replace my bands or not. The liner thickness is within acceptable values except for near the band anchors. It is worn out only at that point on each band. With the rest of the band having good thickness, is it safe to put them back in and run it without risk of damaging the drums?

Me too
I would also like to know. I've took mine apart to replace the output shaft seals, and ran up on the same wear on the bands.
My first thought was to replace them, since I've got it apart. But a wore out 209,000 mile transmission in my Ford Ranger says I'll have little funds left to rebuild the T-20. So if the this is normal wear on the T-20 bands and is not going to damage the drums, maybe I can get a few more years out of them?

keeping them for now
I talked to someone at recreative on the phone who says it is common for the ends of the bands to wear first. His advice was to use a set of calipers to measure the total band thickness, then the thickness of just the steel, subtract the numbers to get the thickness of the band liner, if the liner is at least .010" thick over the general length of the band, it should be good for at least another 400 hours of use. My bands were well over the .010" thickness everyplace except for the ends, so I am putting it back together as is for now. I can't really afford the $110 per band right now anyway.I don't want to go fast, I just want to go anywhere.
