Argo Transmission Fluid

I have a 1985 Argo 8X8 with a 18 hp Kohler Magnum. I am changing all the fluids and need to know how much and what kind of fluid the transmission takes. My dipstick has no markings on it but there is about 2 inches of a brownish gray substance. I would appreciate anybody's input.

My Argo manual says there is a groove in the combination vent dipstick and should be filled to this level. It says to use SAE 90/140 gear oil. My transmission is the 1 speed and a 1981 the book does not state any difference for the transmissions. If in doubt phone Argo and ask they have been very helpful for me. I will go measure how far up the dip stick my groove is and overalll lenght if that would help you.

My dip stick tube from the bottom of the plug it is on is 7 3/4" long and the grove is 9/16" up the tube. The plug sits 1/2" into the case when screwed in so the tube would extent into the transmission 8 1/4" total. Hope this helps.

Mine is a deep red colour at the same level.
I will let you know as soon as I find out more details.

Mine could be wrong so I will look into it more.

I would think grey is fine metal partials or water and brown is burnt red . I am just going from my automotive and marine experience nothing else. If in when you find out please let me know I am relatively new to the AATV world.

Refill the transmission through the oil fill/dipstick hole. Oil
capacity for all C, R, B, N, S and A models is 30 oz (.85L) of 80
W 90 Gear Lube HYPOY-C. Oil capacity for all AVENGER and
FRONTIER model transmissions is 38.7 oz.( 1.1 L) of 80 W 90
Gear Lube HYPOY-C. As you refill the transmission, check theoil level with the dipstick. Check that the oil level is even with
the mark on the dipstick, after it has been seated fully in the
dipstick hole. DO NOT OVERFILL.
Overfilling may result in oil being forced out the breather hole
that could contaminate the brake pads and lead to brake failure.

Roboi they might have used auto trasn fluid in your do to the sever cold weather. . I cheated and used synthetic in mine that I had saved up from sevicing gm rear ends.

I have since drained and put SAE 80w-85w-90 gear oil in my transmission. There is a trick to draining it, don't try to catch it comming out of the drain hole, just put a pan under the front of the beam/frame that the transmission is bolted to, it will run along the beam under the transmission right into you pan.

Draining the trans oil

I cannot seem to locate a drain plug on my 197? argo. Logically it would be on the bottom, correct? Could you post a picture so I know what I am looking for?

The drain plug on my 1985 Argo is hard to see without a mirror but you should be able to feel it. It is on the center of the back side of the transmission(the side facing the engine and the front of the machine) near to bottom.
