  • split shifting explanation?

    Hi all,

so, I'm a little (well, a lot) confused about "split shifting"

if I may, I'll pose some questions, maybe, someone would be kind enough to help me understand.......

    1. do you end up with 4 sticks? left and right for forward, reverse, and, left and right for power, brake?

    2. 2 sticks? left and right, forward and reverse, no braking?

I'm trying to understand, if you have two sticks, do you then end up, (like a "bobcat" skidsteer), using forward and reverse for zero turning and, braking?

    sorry,
I'm trying to read the threads, but, am not clear on this.

    TIA.

    ygmir,

The forum member Brushcutter made this split shift set up for my Max IV. This is what it looks like. The two long rods in the middle are the stock steering laterals. The two curved rods that are on either side of the two steering laterals in the middle , are the independant split shifting rods. When an independant shifting rod is pushed foward , that bank of wheels move in that direction. When an independant shifting rod is pulled backwards , that bank of wheels move in that direction. So to counter rotate , you just push or pull the steering lateral in the same direction that you,ve moved the independant shifting rod to.

basically you end up with your 2 steering sticks and 2 shift levers. all it does is allow you to put the left side tires in reverse while the rights are in forward (or the opposite). the steering sticks still work the same. if the left shift lever is in reverse, you still pull back on the left steering stick to make the left tires go in reverse. it will allow for a tighter turning radius, and i've read that it is very useful for getting "unstuck" although i've never tried the setup so i can't say first hand

        racerone3 ,

Being able to split shift in the water , to make a turn in the opposite direction , really comes in handy when you don,t have sufficent room to skid steer in the water. . I had this problem when I was in a narrow creek at Mud Creek atv park,in Georgia. A split shift , water turn is a lot tighter than a skid steer water turn. Being able to split shift in the water really comes in handy when you need to do it fast!

              well,
thanks guys.......that is much more clear............

              now:
              I wonder:
could it be made using just two sticks: so, pushing a stick forward, go forward, back, go back........
I wonder if, like a bobcat, it would also provide braking........?...........

I ask, because, I have a bobcat skidsteer and, it is a nice way to go......
