  • Comet duster help

I have a comet duster with ribbed cover on my superchief that isnt working properly and I need help!
Ive been using it since last spring and under normal operation, it worked great. One time, over the summer, I was really pushing it hard and one of the pucks rolled over onto the wrong face and caused the clutch to bind up. It got me back home, but the moving sheave was cocked and binding because of it. I took it apart, put it back together correctly, and its been fine since (although I havent been as hard on it either). Today, we had a foot of new snow and I didnt get 2 feet out of the garage and the same thing happened.

Anyone ever had this problem?? Any ideas? I'm kicking myself for not calling comet on this before they went down

    Any help greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks

If the clutch is revved without a belt or if the belt is to narrow for the clutch it will do that. Is your belt worn? Is the clutch designed for a wider belt then what your running? That me my guess. Please update what you find.

Yeah, I learned that the first time I started it up after installing the clutch....didnt have a belt on on it and the same thing. The clutch is set up for this belt and the belt is fairly new....barely worn at all.

      Thanks

Well, Ive given up on the duster. Had it out today on the lake....perfect conditions....ice with a few inches of snow on it. It ran GREAT for about an hour, then a puck flipped over and we were done. The info Ive been able to dig up is "take it apart, clean everything spotless and it will be fine" ...... I get about an hour out of each cleaning. The clutch looks like new, ive got it tuned for the G50b and it works great, when it works.
Anyone want a slightly used comet duster (with ribbed cover )?
Anyone know where I can get a 102c?
          Anyone have a setup for a 102c on a g50b??

          Thanks,
          Ron

Make sure that the comet pucks your using are the ones designed for the ribbed cover and not the smooth cover. They are not interchangeable.

Is there a hole in them? The ones I have seen have one. Maybe you could tie something in there to help hold them in. My guess is maybe a spring like the regular ole centrifugal go kart style clutch spring can go in there for a higher stall speed. But maybe something as simple as a zip tie would help. You would have to take a look and decide your self if that would work or not as I dont have a clutch here to examine.

There is a hole in them and they are the correct weights for the ribbed cover. They arent falling out, just rotating to a taller side (its always just one puck) and binding the moving sheave. I cant see any way put something in there that would allow the puck to slide freely but not rotate. Watching it all work in neutral, when the clutch gets close to fully closed, one of the weights hangs up and flips before it it begins to open up. It may be that the cover itself is not right, but I dont want to spend the money on a guess......I think its 102c time!

                Thanks guys,
                Ron
