  • Has anyone tried hydrostatic transmissions?

I have been thinking about repowering my hustler with hydraulic transmissions from a zero turn mower. Has anyone done this yet? I know it would not break any speed records, but I was wondering how much torque they would have in this setup. Just wanted to get see if there was any comments about these, so I can make a decision. If I do convert it, I will have a working t-20 and 16 hp kohler k341 with clutches for sale if somebody might be interested.
I don't want to go fast, I just want to go anywhere.

Does anybody know what the approx top speed of a 4 stroke hustler is? Doing the math, the hydraulic setup is only good for 8 - 10 mph, might be ok if it has a lot of torque, but is a bit on the slow side. I would be willing to give up some speed for more torque though, my hustler doesn't like any long hills, slows down to a crawl.

I'm converting mine to hydraulic, I don't know about the zero turn setup tho, those pumps don't produce very much psi or gpm, I'm going to run a high stage pump that makes 18gpm at 1800rpm, and 2 birotational pumps that make 1000 rpm at 8 gpm. most of my setup came from industrial equip. but if you had to go buy all of this new then a t-20 would be the way to go, but go to the scrap/salvage yards You will be amazed at what a large company will scrap out when they retire equipment . Everybody thinks hydrostat is always slow but hopefully mine will be an eye opener for some,

An industrial set up like you are talking about is the right way to go. I really don,t think that the hydrolics on a zero turn mower will provide enough wheel speed and torgue for most amphibious applications. I have talked to a friend who thinks using the hydraulics out of a industrial size zero turn mower is the way to go.

This sounds like an issue with the belt, clutch's or engine. I would read a bunch on here and look at all those items before I looked at major conversions. For example, a severly worn or really loose belt will cause you to loose both top speed, and low end torque. If the plastic sliders in the secondary wear too far, they can cause the clutch to hang closed, preventing it from ever "shifting", Broken springs or stuck weights in the primary can do the same. If your engine is just slap worn out and down on power, no changes to the driveline are going to overcome that.

Toro's mowing model 7210 has a conversion kit that they call "Polar Trak". Converts the (Hydrostatically driven) basic cutting unit into a 6 wheel track driven unit for snow removal. (Tracks alone run about 1200 bux a piece.) They do have some good torgue, but are driven by a 3 cyl kubota engine. I took some measurements and am toying around with the idea of converting my t-boss to such a setup. At minimum, I will need the pumps, wheels, and tracks. (Which willl be PRICEY!) I'm just caught up on weather-or-not my B/S 16 hp Vanguard has enough in it to run the pumps and motor with the tracks.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

I have 3 of the cushman trackster and they are hydro`s...and my top speed is about 18 to 20. And they are rated to about 5000 rpms....it is unstoppable...BUT i want the speed so that is the reason i picked up the attex`s....
