  • Name that T-20 ailment

I went on a good samaritan trip to bring gas / water / food to some folks I know living 5 miles away in the country snowed in. It was a fun trip in the Max IV! On the way home however I started to feel a vibration / pulsation in my left lateral. It's steering fine forward and backward. There has always been a very slight up and down wobble on the driven clutch not noticeable at higher rpms. I had the t-20 apart 2 years ago and the band material looked good however they are almost out of adjustment. I'm going to pull it and see whats going on but looking for any guesses. I'm thinking bad bearing on the output shaft or the left band finally gave up the ghost.

I`m sure that you probably checked the obvious, but return trip in snow, could it be as simple as snow and ice packed in wheels throwing them out of balance and vibration being transmitted to laterals?
just thought that if i can save you the grief of pulling trans that i should speak up. good luck!!

Take a look at the seals on that side. If they are leaking and some fluid is coming out, odds are the bearing is bad. Usually when a bearing starts to go bad, the seals will to because the play in the shaft will wear the rubber out, thus making it lose fluid there. Good luck with it, Mike. I hear you guys got hit really hard down there......stay safe and keep us updated.

Thanks guys I'll check tomorrow about the snow that is a good call. jeff good tip on the seal I'll get a flashlight down in there and take a look. If it ends up being the t-20 while its out I might think about moving it and up powering too hmmm.

We've been hammered this week with snow and another storm on sat. I don't know where we are going to put it all!

Just took a look at the seal not leaking. I was thinking though if the pin on the diamond shifter were wearing out would that cause a vibration if it weren't completely shifting? I'll have to experiment a bit in the AM

            Hi Mike,
I had a shift pin go and there was no thumping, just lost forward and hard to get into R, popped out a lot. I'm going with snow build-up in rim, flat spot, or something, but since it was a return trip, my money is on build-up, unless you bent an axle?. I'm at Mogman's and his Max had a similar problem, but enough to shake your teeth out. Tire had de-beaded and Re-Beaded some time in deep mud, and was almost completely full, and solidly frozen The tires on either of our mogs are lighter than this thing. We have it thawing as I type.

My suggestion is that you only make right turns until the snow thaws, Micmac.

                  Hey Micmac,
Here are some things I though of that could help narrow it down. At least give you a piont in the right direction. Not sure if you tried them all.

Does it do it when sticks are in drive engagement and brake engagment? Does it speed up as you speed up? or as engine speeds up? If you get up some speed and pull the sticks back a little for a neutral coast and it still does it maybe tire/axle problem. Try putting it in neutral and rev it and see if it does it at a stand still. Then maybe more trans or engine vibrations problem .
Hope its nothing to serious! Good luck.

All Very good tips I'm going out in the morning and run through the litany of test to see what I come up with. I just parked it that day as I'm terrified of the dreaded metal band on metal drum. I've been diligent with the fluid since I put the unit back together but who knows.

This is all I needed this week. I could write a country western song that includes 40" of snow, planes been pancaked by a roof, dog wont poop outside,My Max broke its tranny and my wife is stuck in the Caribbean (all true)

micmac, was wondering if you found out what the ailment was, or at least hoping that things are
                          looking better?

I did some testing on the Max the other day and wasn't able to duplicate the problem. I know there is nothing in the tires as they are Matt o beadlocks and haven't lost a bead. What I'm thinking is that some Ice/snow got in the tub and was somehow rubbing and causing the vibration. With my luck it will probably show up again at the most in opportune time.
