  • Heavy Duty clutch installation

Hello 6x6world, and thanks in advance for your help. As you can see this is my first post. Ever since
I purchased my 1997 Max IV used one month ago, I have surfed the forum and ive learned everything I know about my Max IV from this site. There is so much useful information here.
After 3 weeks of minor restoration I finally was able to take my Max out last weekend. Wow! what a blast a 6x6 is. This is my first 6x6 ATV. After familiarizing myself with my Max, I was able to determine the minor mechanical repairs that it needed. When coming to a idle the drive clutch at times would not disengage. The engine was idled as low as possible and at times still would not disengage. I spoke with Richard at Richards Relics and he recommended that since I have the 20 HP Kohler engine I should upgrade to the heavy duty clutch and belt. So I did. After much hassle getting the old clutch off I began the install of the new clutch and belt. The new clutch is somewhat different from the factory clutch and will not slide on the shaft all of the way. It needs to slide on another inch before it is lined up with the transmission clutch. The new clutch has a large threaded nut on the end of the clutch assembly and it appears that this is what is preventing it from sliding on all of the way. The old clutch had an open end and used a bolt and snap ring to hold it to the shaft. Has anyone ran into this when upgrading their clutch? Is there a modification I will have to make for this clutch to work? I apologize if there is a post somewhere but I have searched high and low and couldnt turn any information up. Thanks

    Hello collinzh,
I am glad this site has helped you so much. You have a very capable machine there. I would love to have MaxIV.

I cant really help with the clutch issue but could you post some pictures or give a brand, model of clutch you have? I wonder if he sold you the wrong clutch? From what I understand the end of the clutch is covered so its not a complete 1" bore all the way through? You would have to slide the motor over 1" with redrilling the holes or maybe??? IF... you have enough threads in your shaft, you could cut 1" off the shaft? That is assuming I am understanding the problem correct. Do a double, triple check on the depth of the threads in the shaft if you do that, I would really hate to see someone ruin there engine. It might be better to take a look at your engine and see if it will clear everything if it moves over 1". Exhaust would be the biggest issue I thing. If it will, take the engine out, drill the 4 bolt hole exactly 1" or (what ever it is) over. That really wouldnt take to long to do like an hr or so.
I hope to help some and not ruin your engine, lol. Please post what ever it is you do and if it worked or not.
    Thanks

      Thanks LarryW for the reply.
I think that this might be the incorrect clutch. Im going to wait until Monday morning and call Richards Relics to verify the clutch before I make any drastic alterations. I think i would rather go back to stock with the clutch if im going to be required to do any modifications. The stock clutch seemed very capable. As soon as I get this figured out ill update with the results.

          Hi collinzh,

You can always call RI and talk to them about what the correct clutch should be for your Max with the 20 hp Kohler. If the clutch you removed was the OEM clutch, maybe you just have a worn or incorrect belt issue and not a clutch problem.
