  • T-20 mounting bolts sheared out!!!

Has anyone had the bottom front bolts shear out of the aluminum case? (Well the kohler 22hp is prob a little much torque for just the 2 mounting bolts) I was mainly wondering if anyone has had any luck alumn. welding on the case, closing the holes back in and then re drilling-tapping- and installing a helicoil in its place? I am going to make some new structural transmission mounts and take advantage of the four upper mounting holes that is on my T-20 case. This way i can have 8 bolts total holding it in place any thoughts?

Sorry it has been a while since i have discussed my rebuilt sears sportster but man have i had fun i got some videos to prove it.

I had this happen to my machine at the last Busco "get-together." My good friend JerseyBigfoot offered to help my fix it. I guess the process took a couple hours. We drilled out the old bolts. That was the most time consuming part. We used a helicoil kit that another good friend from this site (Lewis) had searched out for me. The kit came with an odd-ball drill and tap. Check it out here. The Attex is set up to take advantage of all 8 mounting holes. This was the first time I ever sheared bolts on a T-20. I know that some of the threads were stripped in the T-20 when I installed it so the bolts were not as tight as they should have been.

Anyway, Whipper is running 50hp through his Spider and as far as I know, he's only using the original 8 mounting holes to anchor the T-20 to the frame. I think you'll be ok after you tie it down with all 8.

Post those videos so we can see them.
