  • Secondary sheave problem

I've been having trouble with the secondary sheave again.I've sent it to the co. after driving only two months when new, they said it was improperly put together at the factory and now it's starting to destroy itself again. The plastic buttons are plowing in the ramps of the helix leaving deep scarses and slowing way down the speed.I've back up the spring a notch, replace the plactic buttons, sanded down the ramps smooth and put grease on them, but it hasn't help.I'll try to back it a few more notches when I get the time, any ideas?

Grease will attract dirt. Always use a "Dry" graphite based lube on clutches. (I say "Dry" because it's a liquid spray but dries with no oil residue to grab dirt. Jig-A-Loo graphite can be found at Home Depot/Lowes and other hardware stores if there isn't a local sled shop.

Well it hasn't had time to attract dirt, the clutch was clean before I took it off and the pastic buttons were plowing in the ramps. You'd think that after it was smoothed down, replaced the buttons, backed up a notch and put a little grease on the ramps that it would of helped out, but it hasn't.I think there's still too much tension in the spring.

Killr, sorry for confusion, I'm not saying that is your problem, only that it will compound it. I have not had the issue you are having with a new clutch. Really old, whipped with damaged ramps and worn sliders yes, but the cause was obvious. It sounds like something is binding, preventing the one sheave to turn, thus putting a super-high load on the ramps/buttons. Perhaps the center shaft has some crap on it. Jerseybigfoot has a LOT of experience with these clutches, maybe he'll chime in, or one of the other racing vets maybe.

          Secondary sheave problem

I've opened up the clutch completely and everything was clean and moving free, so the only thing left would be the tension.

I am trying to think of anything else it could be, because you can put stronger springs on those too, what brand clutch and what color spring? JBF won't be on for a day or two, I think he left Busco NC today, but I'd drop him a PM since he seems to have a heck of a lot of clutch experience. If you just loosen your spring you'll stay in a higher gear (slower "downshift") and you will also allow it to upshift under more load than normal, you may start bogging a bit, of course if it was too tight and you're running the correct spring you'll be fine then.

Just for grins and giggles if you take it apart again...do some measuring. Get a seamstress tape measure and measure the points around the clutch, both parts and compare numbers. Something may be off there, just a thought. You also mentioned it was assembled at the company incorrectly???? If this is true, a mix-up of parts may have occured, like 2 diffent type clutches may have been assembled together that are not made to operate togetner. I am thinking something is off with the point location or the angles as the two parts address themself together. Springs on these units can be changed to many different configerations so i am thinking that is not the problem. These clutches give very little problems.

One i would request a new clutch from the manufacturer of the unit. If they are still in business.

6x6 is correct, Mark is very knowledgabel about these units and between him Don and Whipper there is probably nothing that they have not seen with these clutches. Keep us posted on the final results. This has me curious.

When I returned the clutch to the co. I had them install the red spring while they had it apart, but It should of work just like the green one.

OK I had to go dig this up out of the files in the shop. Taken from the Max service bulletin, on servicing the driven pulley maybe it will help. Follow the instructions, there should not be an extreme "load" on the spring.
