  • T-20 Reverse Gear Problem

I have a T-20 in my Hustler and it had been working OK until the other day when reverse gear stopped working on the clutch side of the tranny. The shift diamond pin is in good shape and it shifts fine into reverse (side of diamond parallel to casing). I also removed the diamond and I can slide the ring with a screwdriver so I know it's going into gear. The problem is that in reverse I have no power or braking on that side. No noise, grinding, etc. It's just acting like it's in neutral. Forward gear works fine. The transmission was recently rebuilt by the previous owner. The bolts connecting the channels to the plungers appear a lot looser on this side than the other and the upper plunger sort of "pops" in instead of moving in smoothly. It pulls out smoothly. Anyone have any ideas?

I would try to adjust the transmission first but it really sounds like you have a band that let loose from the lining. When the previous owner rebuilt the transmission did he replace all four bands and drums or just the seals and orings? Also did the previous owner use the correct fluid in the transmission?

i was thinking a broken band. Mike, did yours make any noise when you had the band/ drum failure or did you just loose steering without a sound? seems like the metal on metal would make awful noises, but i haven't experienced that one with a T-20 yet

Sounds like bad news. I'll check with the previous owner.

I believe it made some high pitch squealing noises but it's been so long ago I don't remember how bad they were. Sorry.

Bradley, if it is a band / drum it's not that big of a deal. It will cost you a little money for the parts but replacing them isn't difficult or even too time consuming.
