  • Formsprag (TB Woods) Roto-Cam Clutch Pack

i am working on a Kadoo which uses the Formsprag (now TB Woods) Roto-cam clutch packs for steering. i think my friction disc are worn out. can anyone help with where to get them renewed or replacements. (reasonable) i contacted TB woods and they actually have a rebuild kit (however it is quite pricey (i was quoted $209 per kit) includes new friction plates, separator plates, and Belleville washers. i think i would need at least 2 kits (possibly as many as 4) to completely rebuild the clutch/brake system. any help would be appreciated.

Did you ever complete the rebuild of the Roto Cam Clutch packs? If so where did you get the parts? I just finished my Stalker only to realize that I should have rebuilt the clutches! It does not steer real well and if I pull up on the left stick I get a terrible grinding sound.

      Thanks for the help, JOhn

yes, i had to buy the rebuild kit from TBWOODS (read expensive$$) as i recall they were about $230.00 per kit. the kit included friction disks, separator disks, belleville washers, and snap rings. each kit will repair one clutch. i bought two kits and used them to repair the drive clutches then used the best leftover parts to rebuild the braking clutches. Betsy Zeis (bzeis@tbwoods.com) at TB Woods was very helpful in determining the proper parts, however they will not sell direct you will have to get a quote from a local distributor. hope this helps.

        good luck,
        Bob

Bob, thanks so much for the information. Any chance you have the specific "kit numbers" off the invoice? Also, did the rebuild make a huge difference? The terrible grinding that I get on mine has me a bit concerned. But, I don't know of anything else it can be.

          Once again, thanks, John

the repair kit number is C440K
before i rebuilt the clutches my problem was the clutches were slipping (machine wouldn't move very well) i am not sure what the grinding sound could be, however my machine will make a kind of chattering sound when turning i am sure it is the clutch and separator plates vibrating when the clutch is loose on the turning side.

Hmm, my machine engages really well and my only problem is on turning so perhaps I should rebuild the brake side of the clutch pack and not the clutch pack. I took it up some pretty decent inclines and had no problem with engagement, it just did not want to turn real well. I am also wondering if the fact that I only have two tires on the one side would would be a problem as I am still waiting for the last tire....

Thanks so much for your help! John

maybe it is an adjustment issue. my machine has a steering wheel instead of sticks (i don't think it makes any difference as to how it works). the way my machine works is when you turn the steering wheel one direction to turn it pulls a cable connected to the clutch on the side of the machine in the direction of the turn. if you turn slightly it causes the drive clutch to slip and as you turn the wheel more it causes the brake clutch to grab. this allows gradual turns (without the brakes) or more dramatic turns as the brakes engage. actually quite a clever setup. I'm sure your setup is similar.
                Good luck
