  • T20 Shifting fixed

While I was at Ashtabula my shifter got so hard it was near impossible to move. I am talking about my attex trainer, lol. Not sure what was going on but I went home and fixed it. Shifts good now. It was hard to explain so video helps. Still hard to explain but at least you can see what I am talking about. Maybe this will help hydro Mike?

    Larry,
Good video. I know sometimes I gotta play with my shifter to get it engaged too. Its a nice tip and I'm sure other people will find it helpful too. That trainer is one fine machine. I enjoyed checking it out at ashtabula.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Finally back in front of a computer....

yeah, mine was the same way, Larry. I ended up bending those arms on mine a little while back, which helped a lot, but it's still difficult. Oddly, i was checking for leaks in my tub earlier this week, and I filled the tub with water as far as reasonable. (NO LEAKS!!) When I drained it back out, it shifted like a dream. Crazy, or what? There wasn't a whole lot of gunk in the front of the shifting mechanism (that I could see), but it must have cleaned something out. I'll have to tighten it up nevertheless. I was thinking about trying to do a splined shaft on the front and rear end of the mechanism, somehow.

      I need a lathe...

We have struck the hard shifting problem on a couple Max's, and we found that if you spray some penetrating oil into the well under the diamond shifters, it soaks in and makes them a lot easier to shift. Water and dust get in there and sieze the shaft.

Good ideas. I've seen a couple different shifter designs how the mechanism actually bind up when each diamond shifter is pulled too far forward or back, making it perpendicular to the T-20 case. This causes it to be locked in place, not shift, and bend shifter linkage. Good idea on the fix, Larry. Simple and cheap, that's what we like to see!

it has been my expierience that when the diamond shifter turns to the point of locking as in the video ,it is ussually due to the shifter pins being worn flat, the quickest temporary fix for flat pins is swapping diamond shifters from left to right ,so that they begin to wear on the opposite side (just put the left diamond shifter in the right side and right side diamond shifter in the left side, how often do you use reverse compared to forward anyways lol ) PS dont forget to order new pins if they are worn flat
He who has not cruised the back country in a 6x6 , has not lived life to it's fullest
A Mans level of mechanical education directly corresponds to the level pain suffered while getting it

Good suggestion Robinhood! If the pin isnt worn to badly. You can take it out and reverse them too. I better check them out before they get to bad. Thanks!

There was a post a while back where someone was looking for pictures of the shifters. Mine were out of adjustment so I pulled them and checked them out.
I hope the quality is good enough to see them.
