  • Transmission whine noise in 2001 Argo

I have heard that the trans noise is normal in some models. I have a 2001 that is pretty whiney in Reverse. Low gear is not bad, and High gear makes no noise at all. Is this something I need to be worried about? I thought there was a post not long ago about additives that could reduce this noise. Is there any truth to this?

Reverse has an idler gear with a bushing in it, it's been said that it doesn't get oiled when in nuetral, so long warm ups might hurt it. I don't know.. just what's been said. An argo dealer heard a conquest in reverse and said it needed a bushing.. How much is too much noise, and what do you do besides pull the tranny apart to check it.. I don't know.

Also the nissan forums I read about my older pathfinder say that GL4 lube will damage the "soft/yellow" metals in the nissan manual trans. Don't know if that might apply to the argo.. I'm guessing not.

My 2004 bigfoot whines in high but is quiet in low and reverse. Been like that since new.

What Roger says is true. Bronze bushings in transmissions will get destroyed if oils/additives that contain sulfer. Sulfer loves to eat copper base alloys for lunch.
