  • Amphicat Transmission

just bought a 'Cat, the last one I owned had the Plunger style tranny (I guess it's what you call the borg t-20) this one only has a lever that moves left to right, right being reverse. what's this tranny called, and if I take it apart are there any adjustments in there? because I got the machine running up on blocks and it jumps out of forward. also the engine idles too fast (need to pick up a tillotson kit) so it grinds badly going into gear. It has one missing chain looks like #50 is it?. 3 of the tires are rotten, it was sitting in water for it looks like 20 years. they aren't the originals, they are 25x12-9 on 4 bolt rims and they look like they have been rubbing on the underside of the body.
    any info would be appreciated

That sounds like the Ontario Drive and Gear manufactured transmission. Is this an older model than the previous one you owned? The Borg Warner one wasn't the T20 in the Amphicat, it was called something else, but very similar in design.

Have you driven the Amphicat on the ground to see if the transmission acts properly then? Is the reverse lever working properly? I think I remember reading about someone having a similar problem and it ended up being with the reverse lever not fully returning.

I haven't tried it on the ground yet, it has 4 tires that are pretty much shot, I was trying to see if it was worth putting any money into. I'm not sure what year it is, it was made in Streetsville Ontario though, the numbers on the plate are hard to make out. the reverse seems to work fine. it may act differently under load. thx
