  • What type of t-20

I just bought a parts machine maxii with a 297 jlo engine and a t-20.
I was going to part it out ie:trans, axles, sprockets motor is stuck body is trashed.i cut it aff with a zaw saw.but now im thinking of either buying another body of just add a roll cage and make a buggy.sorry i got off track i would like to know what type t-20 i have i know their is something to do with the bearing support..how can i tell?

You will have the older style with the straight bar between the plungers. The newer style has a "U" channel, goes clackety-clack when used and does not have the center support.
I'm not sure why the center support is better, but I do like the straight bar (with center pivot) better. I did do the pivot mod to my newer trans, no more clackety!

Buggyman has you headed in the right direction. the kind with flat bar should also have the supported main shaft. (input shaft rides in a bushing in the rs output shaft... newer style doesn't have this and relies on the center plate for support). I prefer the old style as they have a much more positive feel at the sticks (unless you add a pivot to the c-channel type). the old style ones are a little more tricky to get adjusted without a plunger slipping inside the case and tearing an o-ring

That's the Max II parts machine that just sold on ebay, right? The older T-20 has a small needle bearing at the end of the main input shaft which supports it and makes it a tad more stronger. Buggyman and Racerone3 right on about the solid flat bar steering.....it is such a more positive feel, especially at higher speeds. I guess the machining costs for some of the later model T-20s were less when they changed them around. Also, the casting on the earlier T-20 cases were smooth compared to the later "sand cast" cases.

Here's the "buggy" my friend and I owned. It was a rocketship......and kind of dangerous, haha. Your Max was the one that just sold on ebay, right?
