  • Reverse problem T20

I just got an older Max IV last week. It's an 89 with a g50B Chapparal engine, worked on it all week adjusting bands, cleaning carb, wiring etc. Yesterday was the test run. Everything seems to be ok except I am having a problem getting into reverse. Pulled the diamond shifter on one side and it was pretty worn so I replaced it. Couldn't get at the other one on the clutch side so today I pulled the engine and took a look. This one had a little wear but not bad but I had a new one so I replaced it anyway. checked adjustment and seemed to be shifting all the way, the diamonds were hitting the case both in forwad and reverse. Put the engine back in, fired er up and same thing -- no reverse -- if I pull REAL hard and keep pressure on the shifter it will go (kinda hard to run 3 levers with 2 hands). Anybody have any ideas. I have adjusted the bands but that shouldn't matter in this case anyway. By the way, That thing is fast!!

Had the same problem this weekend on my 1995 Max 2. Pulled the diamond shifters and each had grit near the seals, cleaned the grit off and reinstalled, and back to near normal. Today I shot some wd-40 on the recess on the top of the diamond and worked it back and forth, and it feels normal. I didn't think that a little grit would matter, but I guess a bit in the wrong spot can do it.

Do you have a lot of experience with the T20? If not, it may just be a syncing issue. It takes some time to get used to shifting one. Try giving a little throttle while in neutral and then letting off and while the engine speed is coming down, bump the laterals a few times while keeping a little pressure on the shifter. This will help move the gears mesh a little easier.

Thanks -- I'll give these a try -- supposedly this trans was a new rebuilt from Richards relics with less than 20 hours but I have may doubts with the shifter pins worn like they are.
