I have been refering to a link roger s (god rest his sole)put on this site while talking with another lad. It was a how to take tranny apart with lots of great step by step pictures included.Beaver dam argo i think. My problem is when i started taking it apart, and tapping on clutch shaft there is a sprocket on it that is hitting the mechanism that runs the shifter at the top of the tranny.What am i doing wrong? It's open about 1 1/2" so i can look in at this. Why I am asking is, my computer crashed on my son just after i got the tranny out of the machine and have not been able to use rogrs link.The old laptop i'm using now won't load it.Any help would be appreciated. I sent tranny to argo dealer to get done. I could have done it myself, but for a little bit of labour cost it is worth peace of mind knowing that these guys have torn into several and would probably see something that I might miss. I am tired of having to baby it in low range.
So I decide to go cut my new drive chain to length and to my surprise it is 50-2 not 40-2. I ordered without even looking at it. Was sure I have read all along that it takes 40-2. Oh well Haven't got the tranny back anyways, maybe the guy I got it from will swap it out with some 50-2 and some more $. Dad always said not to presume everything is what it's supposed to be.
Well something went right. I went to cut a piece of chain and i need 39 plates plus the master. The chain I had left over is 79 plates.
The old chain was stretched so bad it was over a full plate longer than the new one when laid out beside it and the rollers looked like they were worn about 1/8" away from the side of the plates in some spots.
I was checking the front set of chains and was wondering how much slack there should be before changing them. anyone have any info on that?Last edited by mike bar; 04-17-2011, 06:48 PM.

Ok in response to your PM i do have a trans but i am holding on to it.. so next is to justify how a dealer wants $1600 for a rebuild im totally lost as to how it can be that expensive? after looking at your pics i dont see anything too extreme that tells me you need a complete rebuild? unless both output shafts and differential casings are blown up to pieces i have a hard time believing your trans needs a complete rebuild? am i missing something? lol'99 Conquest 104hp turbocharged intercooled EFI Chevy Sprint conversion

It was 1600 for new and 1200 for a total rebuild. Yes there was damage to output shafts, bearings spun in cage,ring gear was worn, one of the side cases has to much tolerance for bearing and so on. my dealer has everything but the casing. I'm thinking that if i have to spend 1200 i might just as well go 1600 or get lucky and find a good used one.

No problem, i still dont see it but if you feel the price is justified then so be it but.......you can in fact buy oversized bearings or even build up the casing with weld and have it remachined.... i wish you were closer so icould just take your trans and rebuild it myself for half the cost if not less lol'99 Conquest 104hp turbocharged intercooled EFI Chevy Sprint conversion

Hello fellow argonuts, got the new tranny in with new drive chains. The chain tightner is in the middle and when i set the tranny in it was leaning to one side. Everything was down as far as it would go and when i put the chains on the left was so tight i could hardly get it close enough to get the link in with the aid of vice grips.The right was really slack . Then i jacked it up with the adjuster and it leveled out but i am concerned that it is to tight and going to put to much strain on the output shaft bearing. Ther is like no slack. I would like some input from you guys.

As long as you are sure that you have the transmission in correctly and that you have the correct (equal) number of links on both chains, you should be fine. Your chain will stretch a good bit in the first couple of hours use. I would use it cautiously for a while, just riding around a tame trail or around the yard, and then check the chain afterwords.

Yes the same number of links (40)tsubaki. the bolts lined up and everything. it was as if the whole tray was leaning. Can't beieve my luck. I've looked everywhere for a used tranny. Bought a new one, installed it, 2days later one came up on kijiji. I didn't even call to see how much.
