  • T-20 Repair help in Denver Colorado

    Guys.

I pulled my t-20 and am looking for someone to either assist me or someone that I can take it to in the Denver area. The shifting plunger is spewing some serious transmission fluid.

    Thanks for your input.

    Hey Joe,

I have mine pulled as well and am planning on rebuilding it here soon. Do you want to order 2 rebuild kits from RI and come on over and take the transmissions apart together. It will be my first time re-building, but i have tools and space to work. With the article that Jeff wrote up it should be a breeze. (hopefully...) Let me know. -Kevin

      Kevin and Blacklight,

I recently did the refresh on my T-20. With jeff's article and if you take a bunch of pictures as you take it apart it's not hard as all.

Thanks for the tip. Was putting it back together hard? I havent seen the second half that explains how you put it together again. (should be easy though) Thanks again.

          Kevin,

I had a box of 1 gal zip-lock bags, a sharpie marker, and two large cardboard boxes.

As I took it apart I took pictures and marked which side and how it went into the trans. I grouped everything into left and right. As I worked on each case I had the cases looking down into them so I also labeled the parts as Top for near where the case splits and bottom for parts nearer to the outboard. You want to keep the bands and drums matched together

          Couple of notes here:

When you put everything back together both bands go in first and (Guru's please correct this if wrong!) you push the plungers outside the case and THEN install the Orings on them then carefully push them back into the case.

The bands were the most difficult thing to wrestle in place. They may coil when you take them off so they look different than when they were taken off. That's where the pictures come in handy.

I put vaseline on all the Orings including the diamond shifters that pop off after taking their guards off.

Take your time and it's no problem.

Also if you have the replacement parts on hand and do it all in one shot its better than taking it apart and then trying to puzzle it back together 2 weeks later.

Oh and try not to have any spare parts left over!!

          good luck
          Mike

Anyone on the board needing a T-20 manual can pm their email address to me. I have it saved as a word document and can send it.

The manual is actually very easy to read and walks you through the steps of taking it apart and putting it back together. If you use it with Jeff's article, it will not be difficult at all.

I still need to order mine. What do you think about ordering 2 and i'll pay you back in cash with a little bonus? George also sent me the t-20 service Manuel, so we should be set. (thanks George!)
