  • 4-Stroke Clutch options

The stock clutch in my Max IV (18HP Briggs) needs rebuilt or replaced. Some of the rollers inside do not roll anymore. It looks like some machine work is needed to remove the pivots to replace the rollers so I'm not quite sure how rebuildable they are. I'm not even sure of the make and model of the stock clutch.

    Are rebuild parts available?

If I were to buy a new clutch, where should I buy it and what model? I know RC has a high speed clutch and RI can sell me a replacement and there's some Comet 44's online. Does anyone have some recommendations from experience?

    Thanks.

    Hey Lance,

I don't have any reccommendations, but I'm curious if the "non-rolling" issue you're experiencing is due to wear on the roller pin, or what? One of the horrible things about mass-production is that if one goes, it's likely that a bunch more will. Maybe some of us running the stock 1" dia clutches can take a closer look at ours before something goes south.

There is a new manufacture making them called cvtech. There is one on ebay right now. Im not sure how they perform but the advertising sounds like its a good on. But thats advertising. I dont know anybody who has tried one. Here is a link to the ebay listing.

I thought I lubed the clutch pretty often by squirting dry lube through the holes in the clutch. I guess the only way to do it right is to pull the cover off the clutch. The other clutchs I have laying around had the same problem but I was able to lube the rollers and get them moving again. Dons clutch rebuild thread shows screws that hold the arms to the clutch, mine has rivets or something that hold everything together.

I think the power bloc clutch is the OEM for Argo, but I'm not positive. They're a bit pricey.

        Here's a link to the Comet series 44 that I'm considering. 209418A - Model 44C Magnum Drive Clutch 1" Bore 1/4" key

They are nothing new, Argo has been using them for years. I have one on the Bandolero engine in my racer and so far I'm happy with it. Last summer several poped up on EBAY for $105. Right after I got mine, the listing was ended and they showed back up a few days later for around $150

Just found the specs on that Model 44C and they say it uses 7/8 drive belt. Just something to think about.

              I didn't see the 7/8 belt data.

Look at this. Recreatives Max Clutches
They sell the replacement for the Max. Apparantly it is a 780 series clutch for $226.00. I guess I need to call recreatives and see what their price is. I'd like to explore other options also.

I looked at my clutch last night. The rollers actually roll but the bushings inside are worn out enough that the metal on either side of the roller rubs against the clutch cover. The rollers are not replaceable, but the whole arm is replaceable.

So if you have the desire to inspect your clutch, pull the cover, pry the arms away from the center and see if there's play in the rollers' bushing. The only way to lube them properly is to remove the clutch cover.
