  • Why is my new clutch disintegrating?

I have a five year old Max II with 930 hours on it. A month ago the driven clutch exploded. The pads all fell off and the spring unsprung. I got a replacement from Recreative Industries and installed it and a new belt. Then a spring in the drive clutch broke and I was left with two speeds: slow and very slightly faster. I got a new drive clutch and installed it. The vehicle ran weirdly after that, there was little speed at low throttle and a scary amount of speed at high throttle going down hills. I think the two clutches are mismatched.

The driven clutch is breaking down. It's wobbly, makes a distressing noise at speed, and I think I see shards of aluminum flying off. I have another clutch but I don't want to put it on until I have an idea what's going on. Can someone here sell me a clue?

I took a video of the wobbly clutch and posted it on YouTube:

I have a theory. Here is some information I should have mentioned before: The original driven clutch had a green spring. The replacement has a red spring. I think I overspun the replacement driven clutch by going too fast down hills. The clutch opened very wide and compressed the spring more than it should be. As the spring got more compressed it got wider and started to rub on the aluminum "slides," tearing off shards of aluminum and generally wrecking the whole mechanism.

The second replacement clutch I have has a green spring. I *think* I'll be OK if I install it, unless I also wrecked the new drive clutch.
