  • Max IV T-20 input seal leak

Does anyone know if the clutch side input seal can be changed without braking apart the T-20 case? I purchased my first 6x6 last week. What a blast ! It steers well but had no fluid in case at all ! Bone Dry! 1300 hours on machine. Is that considered heavy usage? I am hopefull a couple of seals is all i need.

    Hey Hogneck....

Throw a quart of automatic transmission fluid in there, and see if you're leaking out of the lower plunger seals on the transmission. It's tough to lose ALL of the oil out of the input/output seals, but a leaking o-ring on the plungers will spew out all the oil in a short amount of time. 1300 hours may seem like a long time, but if someone simply leaves the key on, the hour meter will tick away.

Unfortunately, an input seal replacement requires a complete teardown of the transmission. It can be a pain, but in your case, it might be worth it considering there may be some damage or excessive wear if it was operated without any oil. Catching a potential issue early is the key to saving a lot of money down the road with the T20s.

So are you up by Watertown/Ogdensburg/Malone?

Thanks Hydromike. I am in Massena. I ordered the seal kit today from RI. Like You said the absence of any fluid when I initially drained the T-20 has me wondering ..................

@SCMay...I agree .This is a very good site for How too. I just finished tearing out and braking apart my T-20. Every thing looks really good inside. The output or clutch side seal was ruptured and chewed apart. Where and how much to get brake band relined?
          New they cost 110.00 apiece x 4.

Heck, I think we can find somebody to beat that for you.

This is a photo of an invoice from arp35, who had his bands relined by transmission crafters. The address is visible in the photo, and the price ($35/each) is pretty darn competitive. It's a high-quality job, from what other members have said...

Make sure the bearing inside the output shaft is good. Often it's the bearing that causes the seal to go bad.

All back together put 4 ounces of Lucas in it ran it today shifts good .Might have to adjust bands just a little or the springs. In reverse I have to pull harder than I like. Any comments on Lucas ? Stuff is like honey ! I used a homemade tool to adjust the bands . Might not be 100 % .
