  • Bazoo transmission ???

    Hi everyone
Im trying to identify this transmission in my bazoo and the steering setup as well.
need to know how to adjust the steering clutches and service them. I assume the gearbox uses gear oil .
Had it out for the first run since motor install and can only go fast and turn right.
The brakes work ok but when i try to turn left the motor bogs and tries to stall. How do i adjust the steering clutches. Any help would be great.

It kind of looks like an Apex transmission, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Maybe Larry W can help you out.....he knows these pretty well.

It looks different then an Apex. Looks different then the odg amphicat b7 gearbox. Not Haxco. I guess all going by the casting shape and shifting location. I bet if a company made one gearbox, they probably made more. Is there any numbers at all on it? Even patent numbers?

Only thing I can say is it looks like a bazooo transmission. lol

I will keep hunting around online. Maybe I will run into something.

There might be some numbers on the underside but I would need to remove it to see them.
The brake calipers look like they are the same as a 1970 ski doo and I'm thinking the gearbox could be also.
It is forward and reverse only (no hi/low). The gearbox works fine and my main concern is with the brake/clutch/steering and how it should work.

After closely studing your picture this is what Im guessing. I have never seen a bazooo in person. But it sounds like the clutch is stuck on the left side. When you pull back on the left stick can you see if its actually taking pressure of the clutch and not just moving the control linkage? If its stuck, it might break free just by driving it. I have had dirt bikes do that from sitting to long. I just drive them around with the clutch lever pulled in and eventually they will break loose and work fine. You cant really hold it in without hitting the brakes so you may have to keep trying to turn left and hopefully it breaks away. But doing that you are probably wearing your brakes out on that side so keep and eye on that. Probably better to occationally try left rather then constantly holding it to the left. If you try hitting the clutch with a hammer to break it loose you may break the friction material off so be careful doing that. Not sure on the strength of the linkage but if its looks strong enough maybe hit the linkage in the disengagement direction.

Im just going by your picture here.....
Looks to me like the springs on the control rods adjust the drive pressure. Turning the nut in on the end of the control rod will increase the engage pressure. Turning the other nut in the off rotation will increase the disengagement of the clutch pressure. If the disengagement pressure is to great, the brakes probably wont engage.

And I am guessing messing with the nut on the caliper shaft holding the L shaped linkage will adjust the brakes.

I hope that makes sense to you and I am seeing it right.

That makes sense to me...Im going to lift the wheels off the ground and run it with the covers off to see what's really going on and try and do some adjustments. If the left clutch disengages I'm thinking maybe the brake is not able to hold that side for turning...the right side caliper and pads look to be newer so maybe the left side needs to be replaced also. I have never seen clutches like these and don't know where I can get parts to rebuild them. Any suggestions?

If it bogs down when turning left, I think the brakes are working. Thats why I think its probably the clutch not disengaging. Its probably always engaged on that side and just using the engine clutch only when stopped. I dont have any clue on the parts. Hopefully something a machine shop could manufacture if needed and/or maybe relined.

                Thanks Larry you were right.
Today I put it up on stands and ran the engine and sure enough the right side worked but the left side would just cause it to bog down. After 4 or 5 quick jerks with the left stick it broke loose so I held the brake to allow the friction on the clutch disk to clean itself off and now it works just like the right side. Brakes looked worn so I pulled the calipers and cleaned and lubed the sliders so they work like new now. Should get it back together in the morning and will post the results. Thanks again

Well it's back together took it for a drive and it still didn't want to steer left.
Back up on stands I decided to back off the spanner nuts on the steering clutches.
Previous owner had them so tight that steering was very hard.
I was able to adjust each clutch so I can pull the lever with 2 fingers and it steers perfect now...both directions.
                    What were they thinking???
Will take some Bazooo videos and post them soon.
                    Thanks again

Good thinking on them being to tight! Must be the Previous owner was afraid of them slipping I guess.

                      Looking forward to the video.
