Do you mean it just made a grinding noise while PUTTING it into reverse, or once you were IN reverse, it made a grinding noise. That is, you put the machine in reverse pulled back the sticks, gave it some throttle and it made a grinding noise. T-20s inherently make a small amount of grinding when shifting them, but once the transmission is IN a gear, there should be no noise.
Check to make sure that the diamond-shaped shifters are actually engaging all the way forward or all the way backware when you move the shifter to the extent of its travel. There should be SOME adjustment on each shift rod, but I'm not familiar with what each Hustler model is equipped with. Like Jim says, also double check the shift pins on the bottom of the diamond shifters....
Good luck. Let us know what you find out, so we all can learn what's going on with it....sigpic

If you can lower the engine rpm, along with making sure your drive belt isn't too tight, that usually helps. It's likely grinding because the transmission is actually turning too quickly when you're putting it in gear. Lowering the rpm lets the shift collar mesh with the drum or planetary plate easier....sigpic
