  • T-20 belt question

I am almost done with my entire rebuild on my 950....My question is that my belt appears to have the right tension on it...(the belt is new)....But the belt sits about 1/2 to 3/4 on an inch from the top of the clutch on the tranny. When I have it running it all seems to work well....I think it has the green spring in it....Would the RED spring fix this? I am thinking I just have a worn spring...Does that sound about right....

It sounds like a worn spring is most likely the issue. Is the belt the correct 1 3/16" width? A green spring is what typically comes in most 4 stroke AATVs. The red spring keeps you in a lower range/lower gear for a longer time before it kicks into high. Also, with the red spring you'll lose some top end speed, I've heard somewhere around 5 or 6 MPH. Call up Recreatives for a new spring, either red or green. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

jpswift.....thanks for your imput......The belt is the correct width....it is the dayco belt that all are using on the hustler site..I will look into getting a RED spring..I am in need for a better crawler and hill climber than a racer....

Glad to help. I just remembered you're running 24" tires compared to the stock 21's so the 24's would have increased your top speed, but you would have lost some power down low so the red clutch spring is a good idea. That should be perfect for what you're looking to do and it'll give you the power down low where you want it.

jpswift..... I talked with Jay today at RI....He thought my belt was possibly to tight....I changed it back to the old salsbury belt and everything works fine now....I still ordered a RED spring though....Come to find out the Dayco HP 2031 belt that I have in almost an inch shorter than the old belt...I made new engine mounts so I can move the engine but I cannot move it forward enough to make this belt work.... I am stuck for now using the old belt...any ideas if I can find the old salsbury belts anywhere ?

Call the guys at Buffalo Bearing and tell them you're working on a 6 wheeler and that you need help finding a belt. Give them your old belt number and they might be able to cross reference for it, or even locate on based on the dimensions of your old belt. These guys are good at finding odd stuff like that. Their number is (716) 874-1720 or 1 (800) 669-8019. Good luck with it and keep us updated. Glad to hear you and Jay were able to work out the belt issue.....the folks at RI are great.
