  • baker hill 6000 question

I have a spare BH transmission,I also have a spare scrambler that I am rebuilding. My original scrambler has new tires and a 16hp engine.I also put a reverse in using a winch motor,my question is will the baker hill transmission allow the scrambler to actually turn on pavement or very dry ground???My built scrambler steers great when the ground is muddy or wet or snowy but it will not turn at all on pavement-the scrambler has 6 brand new at 101 tires.I understand that the scramblers transmission is the weak point-.Will the baker hill 6000 allow the scrambler to turn on pavement??Does an attex or even an argo turn very easily on dry pavement???

Thats not an easy question to answer. Not all pavement is equal, and not all tires have the same grip. To steer your tires have to slide sideways. It is hard for anything to slide them sideways at a dead stop. If you start moving forward will your scrambler steer then? Is the problem trans slip, or engine HP?

Maybe its just me but I would not use a 5000. Maybe a 7000 because its a little tougher, but the t20 is what I would use if I were to replace a scrambler tranny. Oh wait I just bought a t20 and was planning to put it in my gotcha.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

I bet a 5000 would fit perfect in a gotcha....maybe a trade is in order

Trans appears to slip due to the tires not being able to slide on my cement driveway,my problem is having boats in the driveway due to my wonderful new neighbor who calls the city on me for every little thing I have.my boats have to be in the driveway behind the house,my motorhome has to be three feet behind the front of the house and three feet over, add my bronco and pickup and you get the idea.never mind that the street is dirt and it's a dead end with a total of six houses!chesterfield Michigan to be exact,I moved in leaving the city of Roseville and I never had problems with neighbors in the big bad city, this township living has been a drag. Can't park anything on the grass atv,s must be in the garage etc etc.this is why I wonder if a t20 has the strength to skid steer new at101 tires on dry cement.I have to make a sharp turn out of my garage to get to the backyard.

with an accumulation of that many toys sounds like the next step is an acreage

Acreage would be great and that was the plan but the divorce left me broke! It sure seems like t20 is the answer for all issues.-I have some things to sell and a small savings so I am going to have to get a t 20 sooner or later

Have you tried tightening your clutch springs in the scrambler? Its the rod that the steering cylinders push, if you take the steering cylinders off you will see a nut. I bet a 5000 would work but only if the brake are adjusted right too. But I have seen people put bakerhills in and run it right to the scrambler jackshaft and that gears it down a ton. You would have to grind the big jackshaft sprocket off and weld in a smaller diameter one. Or...... leave it there and weld a smaller one next to it. Then with the backerhill having 2 sprockets on each side you could with a little bit of messing around have a low and high range by swapping chains. And if you do a t20 you will have to change all your sprockets or build a jackshaft that converts the 50 to 40 chain. But that would be easy if you can grind the factory jackshaft sprocket off and weld in a smaller diameter #50 sprocket like I was saying with the BH sprocket change.

I've got a nice fresh rebuilt for you.
But if you own the baker-hill, why not just use it. Save the cash and upgrade later.

I have a neighbor that is a bit of a collector...the law here states that all vehichle must be licensed OR under a roof. So he built the ugliest crappiest looking leanto he could scab together...just to make the person who complained wish the cars were in the open again. Personally, I'd just buy some livestock (piglets are soo cute), and pen them up wind of that person.

Yes springs are adjusted,I think its just because of the new tires and the extra weight of the engine,I also have a large rack in the back. The scrambler is very rear heavy,If I keep all the tires at one circumference the front tires dont even touch the ground. Thanks for explaining the bh set up.It helps a ton

The 6000 does not have reverse, but I believe the size is about the same. Don uses the 6000 his racer. He told me that he felt it was a faster tranny than the t20, but he also said that he would only put a t20 in his boys machines because they are much more indestructible to teenage drivers.

Yes no reverse on my bh6000,I just want it to be able to turn on hard ground or pavement if possible.I made up my mind to put it in my spare scrambler,I just have to find some time .-Its a wonder to me how small the brake pucks are in the baker hill transmission in comparison to how big and heavy duty the disks and sun gears are.The bh does seem to be a much more heavy duty unit than the scramblers transmission.
