  • My T-20 issue

So I purchased a T-20 kit an took a stab at doing the rebuild last Saturday. I had already taken the tranny out of my sidewinder, so part 1 was done.
My next step was taking all the bolts out and that went okay. Then I could not get the tranny apart... I could get a screwdriver in between the 2 parts of the tranny but could not get more then 1 inch seperation between the 2 parts.
What am I doing wrong? Please note that I have the belt wheels still on it. Could this be a problem?

Does anyone know somebody in COLORADO that can do this for me? I am getting swamped at work and travel and have minimal time to continue this process.

If by belt wheel you mean the clutch then yes you should take it off. Although that shouldn't hold the 2 cases together. There is a splined shaft that the not clutch side slips onto. I wonder if the spline is caught up on on of the drums in the non clutch side.

I would : make sure the brake bar is off the plungers and push the plungers into the case a bit to release the bands. Try shifting the non clutch side (or both) and spinning the sprockets to get things lined up. I wouldn't force the cases apart the should come apart fairly easily. Probably wont do anything but you may want to pull the diamond shifter out of the non clutch case to see what is going on.

    Good luck

look in articles section right here at 6x6 world..... http://www.6x6world.com/forums/aatv-...n-rebuild.html make sure you apply even pressure on both sides separating halfs ,one half needs to slide strait off main shaft....carful prying with screwdrivers...dont want to distort cases or gasket surface!!!! route 6x6 also has lots of info Google Image Result for http://www.route6x6.com/t20/t208.jpg

You don't have to remove the clutch for the two halves to come apart. You may want to hold onto one half of the transmission and gently tap around the other half with a rubber mallet away from you.

most likely you are only splitting the input half of the case from the center plate and the other aluminum case half is stuck to the iron center plate. The input shaft is held to the centerplate with c clips. Heat the case that is tight to the center plate to help loosen the fit and use a chisel against the iron center plate to knock it off the case.

So I finally got the T-20 apart today. Thanks to a good rubber mallet. Strange thing though. I found some spacers floating on the clutch side of the tranny.

I also got down to the clip on the drive shaft. I am having a problem trying to get this off. Please let me know if any of you have any secrets on this. I also would like to take off the lower clip(the bigger one on the end of each side). How do I get that off?

              Thanks for all your input.

Those thrust washers should go under those three small gears that are under that first drum in that picture.

For the clip, there are some special pliers you can use to get that out. I will post a picture of them when I get home. I've got a full T20 rebuild article with over 100 pictures that should be up by the end of the week.

Someone did suggest the pliers. I think I will stop by home depot today.

                      Update

So I have been working on this project and it is certainly progressing.

I have the T-20 back in and also had to replace an axle.

                      Here is my latest concern.

I now can drive forward, turn both directions and can even circle when in forward.

                      BUT..

When I put my Hustler in reverse I can ONLY go straight back. It is not allowing me to turn. This is not a big deal since this rig is going to be a paintball tank but any suggestions would be helpful.

Just to make sure, when you are trying to turn in reverse you should be pushing the stick forward on the side that you want to turn towards. Is that how you are trying to turn?

So when you go to back up you will pull both sticks all the way back. Then to turn towards the driver's side, push the driver's side stick forward while still pulling back on the other stick.

I would check the adjustment on the spring shift mechanism that connects to the diamond shifter in the T-20. When I put my Hustler BIGFOOT back together I had it adjusted so that when I shifted into reverse, it didn't fully engage the diamond shifter on the one side and I got a similar effect as you are getting. Just a thought. Let us know if this changes anything.

                              Hey JP and Blacklight,

Just a quick observation for us Hustler guys....I was having this problem getting my Hustler to shift into reverse, and I had the spring shifters adjusted all the way out. This last teardown I noticed that the long shift linkage that connects the shift lever to that big shifting thing in front of the T-20 (Technical name???)...also has length adjustments at both ends....funny I never noticed that.
