split the t-20 and found 90w gear oil, yippie, and a missing thrust washer, the one that goes between the carrier plate and the ring gear drum. the drum is worn down where the plate has been rubbing against it...normal? should i be worried about the band material? how can i tell if its bad/worn? was hoping that just a good cleaning and fluid would get me by.....but no..

Unless your wear is excessive, I wouldn't worry about it. I would suggest buying a new seal/gasket kit from Recreatives ($60 some) and replacing all the seals. Inspect all your bearings, and clean everything up well. Use a digital caliper to measure the bands to see how much material is left on them. If they don't measure 0.095" or more (others recomend 0.100") get them relined. Or if any of the material is coming loose.....get them relined. Or if anything just doesn't look right, get them relined. If in doubt....get them relined. You do not want the bare bands to contact the drums, it doesn't take long to ruin the drums.
