Hustler 950 nice shape, good price

I went to look at a Hustler today on the off chance that it was a 980 Bigfoot. It wasn't, but what I found was a really nice 950 with a rebuilt Kohler 16 four-stroke for a reasonable price. If I didn't have a 950 at home already, I'd have this one. The owner's a real good guy and is asking $1500 for the machine. It looks great, and started and ran fine. Honestly, the thing looks almost new. I don't want to put the owner's name and number on this post, but if you PM me I'll send it to you.

Don

Don, that is a very good looking Hustler. Im guessing that is a 1980 or 1981 since it has the 16 HP Kohler single. That is a super good deal for someone. What is the status on your Hustler project?

Outside under a tarp, but at least the top half and the bottom half are in the same part of the country now. There's only so much room in the garage- I need a place like Whipper's!

The owner said he was pretty sure it was a 1981, and it's a really nice machine. He has it advertised locally, but isn't attracting a lot of attention with it.

The machine's in West Virginia, boncrshr. I wish they were as common around here as they are further south-west.

Don

Ohh...the guy that we went to Arkansas to see had a 3 car garage that looked very similar to that one...

Yeah, I was pretty blown away too when I saw pics of Whipper's shop. He needs his own show..American 6x6.

Hey Don,
I have lots a room. If you'd like to ship some of your toys out here I would be more than happy to play with them until you're ready to have them back.
That hustler sure does look good, I think you should go back and get it.

I don't think I'd make it into the driveway, Whipper. The wife's well armed and a pretty good shot. If you were a little bit closer I'd take you up on the offer and send a couple machines over just so they'd see some use. You could always just move your whole business back east...... and bring the rest of the Southwest amphib crew with you!

That Hustler sure is in good shape for an amphib of that year model. How long is it compared to the newer Max IV bodies? Also, how hard is it to change out the motor thats in it now, and replace it with a larger motor,,,say a 25 hp kolier,,or maybe just a 23 hp Briggs motor? Is that a Borg Warner T-20 in it I see? How big a tire can you put on this Machine?

How does the frame on this Hustler compare to a later model Max IV frame? Similar to,, or heavier made?

They must be pretty close in footprint to the Max IV, maybe a little smaller. I've seen Briggs opposed twins in them, but a tall engine may have clearance problems.

Yes, it's a T-20, and the frame and drive train are pretty heavy-duty. The axles are 1 3/16" and the chains are #50. I've seen the 950s with 26" tires squeezed under them, but I'm pretty sure they rub. I'm going to put a set of 25" Rawhide IIIs on mine.
