This only works if your machine has the original salsbury clutch. Not sure how long Salsbury did this. But the serial locking tab located by the 3 bolts that hold the outer cover on has 2 separate larger numbers stamped on it. First one I dont know for sure but may be the month. Second is the year. I have seen this more then a few times on machines with known years and they always match up. The secondary clutch also has a similar tag. Here is a picture of the drive clutch. Second will work if you have a Briggs and Stratton powered machine with original engine. The engine ID tag has a couple sets of numbers. Model, Type and Code. The Code has the date. The first 6 digits is the year, month and day. So this own shown was built 03-06-02 IMG_20131006_090239.jpg
Now if the clutch or engine was laying in the factory in between years it may be off a year making your machine a year newer then the date. Not sure how quickly they used the clutches and engines as they where produced.
If your 6/8 wheeler is new enough to have a 17 digit vin number. The 10th digit is the code for the year. Here is the list of codes. ( This actually works for any motor vehicle 17 digit vin number I believe, atv, car,..... )

I edited it because the ID tag on the Secondary clutch also has the same numbers as the primary. Since they are normally always original it might be your best bet. Primaries seem to get removed the most with engine swaps or what ever.
