  • Got my first Argo!

Well I finally got my mini tank. It needs a little work but nothing I don't think I can handle. From what the guy I bought it from told me, it is an 86 Argo Magnum 18hp. He sold it to me for $1300 because it was popping the oil dipstick out when you drive it. Once I met him to check it out, he informed me that it didn't have that problem till this year and the only thing he changed was a breather tube. When I looked at the tube I saw that it was kinked and looked like the wrong tube. after a short test drive/overall check I took it home. To make a long story short, it took me 3 hours and a "custom" breather tube before I realized that the problem was the breather tube was not even going to the correct spot. Once I connected my "custom" breather tube under the air cleaner where it belonged, It ran perfectly with no more dipstick popping! Now the only issues I have is that the back right tire leaks air at the rim and the middle right wheel wobbles a bit (only really noticeable at higher speeds) and I can also feel something scrape under the floor board right above that wheel. I didn't have a jack to jack it up but when pushing it in the garage it looks like the axle may be bent. I'm hoping one bent axle wont set me back too much.

Let me know what you think. Oh, this seems like a dumb question but what is the easiest way to change the oil in one of these things?

    Easiest way? Hire someone.

I read that it might be a bit easier if one of the clutches were removed first because the drain bolt is hiding under it.

      Congrats on the good deal.

Buy (or make) a drainzit hose......here is a recent thread on them http://www.6x6world.com/forums/engin...e-avenger.html
Removing the secondary clutch is for the Avengers with the oil filter right behind it. Does yours have a filter?

It would probably be a good idea to change out the bearings and flanges on that bad axle too if it has been run like that for a while. If you need some help with it, you can bring it over here. I'm only about 20 minutes from the Argo dealer in Marshall

Does this have hydraulic brakes?Other than the Kohler engine, the air openings look like a standard Vanguard or I'm pretty sure they made a heavy duty Vanguard also.

Magnums also had halogen headlights, highback seat back, front bearing extensions, brake cooling fan,and instrument gauges. After looking at my brochures I'm pretty sure this one isnt a true Magnum.

89 was the first year for Magnums.Sorry ,but my research tells me you have a Standard Vanguard model with a replacement engine.Hope the Magnum thing didnt really influence your purchase. It looks to be in pretty good cond. but the hydraulic brakes would of been a huge benefit.

Looks to be a late 6 I/C since it has the 18 in it, not a Magnum due to lack of pop out firewall, seat back, tool box etc.. Can see the firewall does not pop out and looks the the brakes are near the floor. For 1300 you still got a great deal, looks like it has rawhide 3's on it also.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
                Joe Camel never does that.

The Magnums actually started in 87, this machine could have come with either manual or hydraulic brakes.

You are talking about the Heavy Duty models, but you could only get the Kohler engine in the 8x8 model , not the 6x6,not until 89 when it became the Magnum model.

No i was pretty much looking for something with 18hp or more that I wouldn't have to dump to much cash into just to make run. Whether it is a true Magnum or not doesn't really matter to me. I got to test it out all day yesterday and I'm happy to say, it has all the power I need. It would be nice to actually know what year and model machine I have though. In an earlier post someone mentioned something about rear counter weights on certain argos. Mine has the counter weights but im not sure if that helps narrow down what year it is or not.

I'll have to wait a week or so to get the serial number cause the Argo lives at my property up north. I'll be going back up soon to cut the grass and take the bent axle off the Argo So i can get a new one. Thanks for the help.

Alright I got the serial number from my Argo while I was up north doing some work. It's K5711. So it looks like it is a 6 I/C, but what year?
