  • Argo bogging

    Hello

Have finally gotten my 8x8 Argo running with the rebuilt Koheler 399.

I had some problems getting it to where i am now but am still experiencing a few bugs.

It seems that whenever i turn or put differential brake pressure on, the machine bogs right down and becomes very underpowered. High or low gear.

I usually end up having to turn by giving short bursts of speed and then brake in the direction of my desired turn 3-4 times to complete it.

Also when climbing incline or even when driving it up the tilt trailer to load , it will begin to bog down.

When running in high gear on a straight run i can only get about 15-20 mph, this seems slow for this 399 but yet again it is an 8 wheeler.

I am not sure if its a carb problem ...carb was just rebuilt, but you never know with these old Tilitson HR.

would anyone have any suggestions on how to remedy this or at least trouble shoot.

    Thanks
    Barry

Bogging during turning is normal operation for the older Argo transmissions. They are an open differential design that use brakes on the output shafts of the transmission to stop that side from turning so you have the brake fighting the engine and visa versa. It's normal to make turns as you described. Instead of making one sweeping turn, you will often make several small turns to carry the power through the turn. With that said, since it is bogging going up a hill or inclined trailer, you still may have other problems and I think you are right to start by questioning the fuel / carburetor. Sorry I'm no more help than that. Some of the members with some experience with that motor may be able to help further.

Thanks for the reply Mike ...it sheds a bit more lite on the matter. Also, if there is a carb / fuel problem ...i still may be able to muster a bit more turning performance once that is taken care of I hope.

Look at your sparkplugs to check if one is black or fouled.
You could be running on 1 cylinder.

What kind of rpms is it turning? do the clutches look to be working right?

          Joe Camel never does that.

I also experienced a bog in my 1990 Argo magnum. I rebuilt the carb and tuned it according to kohler specs. It helped some but was not the cure. My compression test was good. My problem ended up being clutch issues. The spring in my primary was weak allowing the clutch to shift to aggressive. My secondary clutch spring was also in need of replacing. I completely overhauled both clutches and added the primary spring shim and made it run like totally different machine. The back shift in hills or tough cornering is improved ten fold. Hope this helps
