  • Chain tension help please

Hello, I got my first Argo a few days ago. From what they told me, it's a 70's model. Serial number 475. I don't see any way of adjusting the chain tension. Any help would be great as they seem loose to me.

I am not sure how they did it back then but now you need to replace the tensioner springs

Do not use an elastic band like the previous owner of mine did

Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

        Chain tension help please

Hey guys my 1970 Argo doesn't seem to have any way to adjust the chain tension and I've started to notice a bit of slapping of the chains between the front and middle axle.

Any ideas on how to remedy this?

My 1985 Argo has some chain slaping every once in a while. When I first got it, it did it regularly, I pulled up on the tensioners to expand the springs and cleaned all of the debris out and sprayed liquid wrench on them. It seemed to help, Like I said I only experience it every once in a while now.

The problem is that my argo doesn't have chain tensioners.

How do I get the chain on

I have a 1970 Argo. It doesn't have chain adjusters or tensioners so I took a chain off and removed a link. Now I can't get the blasted thing back on. I'm thinking adding the link back in and then fabricating some type of tensioner. Richard at Route 6x6 told me today that with these early ones, you just replace the chain when it stretches enough to get loose. Well if this is the case, how do you get the bloody chain on when it's new and tight. Uggggggggghhhhh! I'm getting frustrated here.

There are a couple ways to get er reasonably tight...

When the chain is in, (lets say front and middle sprockets if this is the drive chain for the tires), lying on the bottom of the tub, wrap the chain around each sprocket and then get someone else to turn both tires towards each other (on the top).. this'll pick up the slack on the bottom and allow you to link the top together.

Or if your by yourself, you could fabricate something out of a ratchet strap and piano wire the strap ends to the chain and ratchet it tight.

I'm surprised to hear that there are no tensioners on the old argos...

I ended up putting the link back in and reinstalling it. I'm going to fabricate some type of tensioner. I'll search the forum for ideas.

                    chain adjusters

                    hey quiethorse
if you go on route6x6 site and go to parts menu then click on chassis you will find some neat little adjusters shaped in an L shape with the nylon block on the bottom that you can just bolt on and slide up or down to adjust tension to your chains. fitment should be fairly straight forward. Nice to see another argoer keepin them vintage machines runnin!

I am interested in seeing how the older machines did it.
there should be a chain take up system of some type .
mid 80's used a spring type that was self adjusting until the spring got too loose or broke

On my 1970 Argo there really isn't anything there. I can't find any holes in the frame where a previous tensioning system would have been installed either. If someone has a '70 with such a system I would love to see it. I went to route6x6 and saw the bracket that they sell. I'll just make some of these up myself. Should be fairly easy to make and install.
