  • Rebuilding a 8x8 Argo Response and need some advice

I just got my 1st Argo home and have decided to go completely through it. I had originally thought I would replace a few bearings and chains and go, but on closer inspection it needs a little more love.

I have split the body and removed the bolts for the engine and transmission. I need to split chains now but have never worked with a double chain nor a chain this size. Can someone recommend a chain breaker?

The metal floorplan has some significant rust so I will cut that out and replace. Once I check the rest of the frame for cracks I will sandblast and powder coat the frame. I will go back with all new bearings, brake pads, and chains since I will already have it apart. Is there anything the I might be missing since I will have it apart that I need to replace?

Also has anyone tried to coat the tub with Rhino Lining? Was wondering if that would be a good thing or a bad thing.

I will be adding tracks as I go back together so if anyone has some for sale please contact me.

There's usually a split link in the chains, can be difficult to see if they're covered in crud. Clean them off and then wash the tub out later.

Was worried it would take the slick out of the tub and add weight.

Yup, not only does it make it grabby, but it won't even last very long.

            CRKOSTER,

This is my opinion only... powder coating is neat to look at but COULD be overkill for your application. I suggest a good paint job and save your money. If you need to repair a chipped spot, just sand and apply more paint. That evolution is not so easy with powder coating.

Consider fuel system renewal since you have it torn down already... at a minimum new fuel line.

Ever thought about HD axles? That will help with your track operations.

Could be very difficult to powder coat HDPE ???? in fact, impossible Don't know what shape it would be when it came out of the oven

I've got powder coating operation, so that is easy. Only powering the farm after all axles and bearings are removed.

HD axles sound intresting. Where can I get them?

Sweet baby Jesus what a project.

I bought a used Argo 8x8 Response and knew that I would need to fix it up a little but man is this a project.

I have split the body, removed the motor/transmission, removed all of the axles (had to cut 2 in half to get them out), took the frame out of the tub. There is some significant rust in the floor pan so it looks like I will get to use my new plasma cutter.

I will be going back together with new HD Axles, all new bearings and chains, and a new set of tracks.

I honestly cannot say I would do it again if I knew how bad of shape this thing was in, but I am to far in to stop now.

If anyone has suggestions or advice please let me know.

My friend was in the same boat as you 6 months ago.
I had a spare conquest chassis that was blasted and powder coated which we used, and fitted new bearings, seals and chain. I had spare axles removed from a 2005 avenger which we also fitted to replace the original rusty / pitted ones. It came out great and we have our first trip away with it on 26th June.

You will have a good solid machine when finished, the 18hp Briggs engine seems to be decent.

I would fit rear alloy bearing extensions when you are down that far.
Check the tank for debris in the bottom, give it a clean out if required.

I also think HD axles would be the way to go. If you haven't already, download or get a parts manual for your unit(Argo ATV)

Did you ever find a good chain breaker for your response?

I need to remove my chains and want to use the proper tool.
