ive been having charging issues on an frontier 6x6 (vanguard 26hp) for a while, put in a new reg/rec along with a new 100amp split relay as i wasn't sure which had failed. out yesterday and reading about 14v when engine was revved, after about an hour the needle stopped moving and settled on 12.5 i presumed the battery was charged and the relay was doing its job. after about 3 hours it became obvious it wasn't charging..... so i went and joined/bypassed the relay under the hood by connecting the two red battery wires to one terminal, bingo!! charging again and needle going up and down when revved.
question is, is there a reason for the split charge relay?
