  • split charge relay thing

ive been having charging issues on an frontier 6x6 (vanguard 26hp) for a while, put in a new reg/rec along with a new 100amp split relay as i wasn't sure which had failed. out yesterday and reading about 14v when engine was revved, after about an hour the needle stopped moving and settled on 12.5 i presumed the battery was charged and the relay was doing its job. after about 3 hours it became obvious it wasn't charging..... so i went and joined/bypassed the relay under the hood by connecting the two red battery wires to one terminal, bingo!! charging again and needle going up and down when revved.

question is, is there a reason for the split charge relay?

      Do you run two batteries?

no pasean, just one, the relay is on the main red wire from the rectifier to the battery, its shown on the wiring diagram and sold as a spare part

I know that a split relay is normally used when you have two batteries. The vehicle will use 1 battery and automatically switch to the second when the first drops below a pre-set voltage. most will also stop voltage drain from the starter battery so you don't get stuck with a dead battery and can't start the vehicle. It's a little more involved that all that but that's the jist of it. I kind of remember something about the smaller engines in tractors, utv's and so on using a split system to power 2 groups of components, like 1 being lights, radio, etc and the other for heavier use like a winch, charging the battery, and so on. I have an issue with my Argo too so I'll be researching the systems they use and I'll let you know what I find if it applies to you.

ok after a good look at the wiring in the argo and on the online wiring diagrams it turns out the relay should be there, its called a rectifier relay!

Can you post a photo or the url of the schematic you're using?
