  • Argo throttle cable keeps breaking

So I have gone through 3 throttle cables and the last two only lasted about 10hrs each. early 80's argo KB, with a Kohler 17hp. I upgraded the plastic twist grip to the new one, as the original part number is shown as discontinued.

They have all broken in the twist handle right below the cable ball where it hooks into the twist grip.

This is by no means a big deal, we are getting good at slapping some vice grips on the cable end and driving home, but its a pain in the butt.

I swagged my own cable this time going a bit thicker in diameter, but I'm not seeing any similar problems in the forums so maybe I have another issue.

Any thoughts? and any suppliers for making throttle cables?

I got a snowmobile thumb lever on mine.... like it much better than the twist grip.

I thought about going that way, I just wasn't sure if thumb fatigue would be an issue, we usually ride for 4hrs at a time. Or if their would be interaction between the throttle and steering actions. It might be something to look at. It would be nice to have thumb and hand warmers.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
          Joe Camel never does that.

I had a similar problem with Argo throttles a few years back. I contacted Argo directly and they indicated there were some issues. Until they got the problem fixed I went to a local ATV repair store and they made me several spares. Those have held up for several years now.

I binned the parts, they didn't seem photo worthy.

              Doh

It only takes me 15 mins to make a cable when I'm in the shop, but to break a cable every third ride had me thinking something else was wrong.

We'll see how long the one I made out of my daughters snaring cable holds up for. If nothing else I'll but some ends and make a few up. But its not a sticky cable run, or overly long. I debated putting a stronger spring on the carb end to take out any possible slack in the cable. I like the idea of a two finger pull type lever. But the riding season is done, sleds are out and ready to go so I have lots of time to play and mod it.
