Only had my 89 argo 8x8 for a few months. All worked fine until recently. goes great in forward or reverse, but when I put a load on such as hard brake steering, backing up a hill from a dead stop, etc, something is slipping. Looking at the drive train while applying power it seems the differential is slipping under load. sounds like a chain skipping a sprocket, but that's only what it sounds like, its not what's happening. As a mechanical dummy it LOOKS like it is the shafts that come out of the transmission housing that aren't spinning properly. Back yard diagnosis anyone? Time to part out? (18 HP Kohler)

It could be the trans. diff. or simply loose chains jumping, broken keys in the drive disc or various other issues. A small video of what it is doing with the firewall off, crap it's an 89, through the hood can tell us all many things( or guesses at least ).sigpic
My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.

OK, I took a better look and the chains are not jumping, where the drive shafts come out of the transmission the shaft chatters under load Is there a key or pin there or is this 89 just a piece of sh*t. Can't post a video as the left front axle shaft has come out of the inner bearing. I don't know how to make the shaft stay where it belongs. I put a new grease seal in and I guess I put it back together wrong.

Again, it could be something simple like a broken drive disc keys or the differential could have broken gears in it. You may have a broken teeth on one of the jackshafts due to worn chains. Your description is somewhat common yet they are all vague.
Where are you located?
It is possible your issue is external of the transmission, though the worst may have happened.sigpic
