those are bolted onto the manifold they are pretty sturdy but i believe they were there for holding the two exhausts in place. thats where the exhausts would be if the engine were just for a generetor. never mind just found a picture of a m18 as a genertor application and those two pices of 90 degree metal do not hold the exhaust either so it must be a hoist!

once you hook to them and slowly start lifting you will see if it's a good strong point. if not, you should be able to use a couple of ratchet straps around the motor to get a good hold. just wrap them around and around like a net. lift slowly and watch the motor. it may tilt some, thats o.k. as long as there is a good grip on the motor. j.b.

Great job. Just take your time. It would serve you well to study how this thing is put together, and try to understand why it built the way it is. most of being able to mechanic on something is simply being able to understand what each piece does.
I can't help you with the caliper issue....I have never seen one of these machines in person, much less the caliper. Someone on here will be able to help.

curtis, from a safety standpoint.. when you go to put motor back in, make sure those ropes thru the holes in the motor brackets did'nt get cut some. may be better to put a roller chain quick link thru those brackets then use the rope. would not be fun to have the rope break as you lower the motor. johnboy
