  • 1970's engine swap - 2 stroke to 4 stroke

    Greetings,
I'm brand new here. I have an early 1970's Argo 6x6 with a Chapparal 2 cycle engine. I would like to swap over to a 4 cycle. I have a 20hp Kohler Command V-twin with a 1-1/8" shaft. I would like any insight you folks could provide on doing this swap. What issues need to be considered? Is there enough room to fit this engine in the buggy and get proper clutch and belt alignment?
    Thanks in advance.

WOW, I personally have never seen the Chap 6 wheelers before and here 2 showed up in the last week.

As far as the swap, you will have to modify the existing powerpack frame as it should have a raised portion that the 2 stroke sits on, the tecumseh machines were just a flat plate that may need to be altered for the engine to orient properly. The engine would need a new 1-1/8 drive clutch for the engine that hopefully matches the current belt size of the driven convertor ( or that would be needed aswell). Wiring and exhaust work will be needed. It should fit ok, there are quite a few threads and swaps on this forum and pics of those machines are in the gallery if you can find them. The biggest thing with the swap is how clean you want it to appear, either seamlessly or not.

    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

You have a very old machine. I would love to see some pictures of it. If you have the serial number of your machine either O.D.G or Fox Valley can tell you what year exactly it is. Good luck

I'd like to see some pictures also, the frame and axles along with the engine bay. Is it ABS or a poly body machine? My ABS machine has a Kohler with the one piece 7/8" axle sprocket set up, I can only assume yours has either the 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch axle set up with pinned detachable sprockets.
