  • Diesel Argo 8x8-HELP

Hey fella's, i just got home from princess auto with my new 10hp Diesel, i have two old 8x8 Argo's with a few motors to take parts from, so i am going to try to have the transplant done by Sunday afternoon, i will post up pics for all those who are interested, and maybe even a vid of how she performs, here's a pic of the Argo i am going to be putting it into. First question is do i need another 300 amp battery? cause if so i would like to fab up a battery tray first thing

Does that thing have the same size battery as the later argos? I have a 500+ rated battery in mine.. checked it once by starting a nissan v6 with it..

There is an Argo with a diesel for sale on Ebay Motors. You might be able to get some help from the seller as to how he installed his?!?

No, i just put in a new 300amp utility battery, i am just thinking that i might need the extra amps cause of the compression, i checked the manual and it says nothing about amps needed

All i can say is WOW!!!! i was expecting the biggest piece of crap, i just got in from getting it prep'd and i flushed it twice, i ran it for 5 mins, flushed the oil, ran for another 5 mins and changed the oil again. So the thing started right up like it was a gasser, was very very surprised that it was actually quiet, and the throttle response was very good, not what i was expecting at all, over all i friggin love it especially considering what i paid for it, now its ready for the install tommorrow

can you post a link for pricing and location and specs?
                  That sounds great!!
diesels do generally take more cranking power.......
It might say on the starter what draw at load it has.......

You should be fine with the battery, it's the starter motor that needs the torque. I assume the engine comes with it's own starter motor. If not, then you should upgrade to a higher torque motor. A gas engine starter will work when it's really warm, but if you plan to start it in cold weather, it won't have enough umphf!

If you have (or know anybody with) an inductuve DC ampmeter or starting/charging system analyzer. Just clamp it around the positive cable and crank the motor. The peak amps draw will be your guide. Working amps are usually around 1/2 of the peak amp draw. I'm assuming this is a 2 cylinder you have. Being 2 cylinder and smaller bore, I figure you shouldn't PEAK at more than 350-400 amp draw. The in-line 6 cylinder Volvos I work on will only draw 700 peak. Your 300 amp batt should be plenty.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

No prpoblem guys, i am starting on it right after work today and going all night till she's done, it has a HUGE starter on it probably bigger than the one on my car, just so you guys know this motor is on sale at our Canadian princess auto for $488 CDN, the reg price up here is $899. A huge bump in the road is to figure out the simplest way to stop the engine, because its mechanically fuel injected all you do now to stop it is bring the throttle all the way down from idle, so no switches to turn to cut power to it, But i think i have that solved already using a switch because i do not want to use any levers like a riding lawnmower throttle, i want the Argo to be as stock and user friendly as possible

Check to see if there is a wire terminal on the injector pump. With the naturally aspirated diesels, there is usually a solenoid that cuts fuel in the injector pump, or a small lever. (Some had thumbscrews to bypass the solenoid in case you lost electrical power.)
It's all just nuts and bolts.

Just wondering if you have a Princess Auto part # for the engine. Also any Idea if they ship to the U.S.
