    Same Problem Different Fix

My friend the Argo Dealer was working on a customers 8x8 Conquest with the 20 hp. Kaw water cooled engine, it would backfire through the carb under load. Idling was fine. It would even backfire at idle if you rev'd the throttle up. I said it must be a sticking intake valve, so he tried dumping some carb cleaner/tune up stuff down the carb, didn't work.

Next step was going to be removing the valve cover and have a look, when I said hey try a new plug in that cylinder, BINGO problem gone. Put a new plug in the other cylinder and tried it under load, no more backfiring. Cheap fix this time.

      Clutch

Have you lubed the clutch with silicon as per the instruction manual? According to the manual every 50 hrs. WD inside the driven clutch can become sticky and possibly hamper correct operation after sitting in high temp. Just my 2 cents

        HALLELUIA!!!!!!!!!

        Hi All!

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input!
A couple things before I get to the good news...

I think a lot of you are thinking the Frontier has a Kawasaki engine in it... it's actually a B & S (mine is the 23hp).

That issue with the exhaust valve sounds like a very common one.
Thanks for the info on that...
Also, yes, I did lube the clutch...

        But now for the news!

$115 later and.... It's FIXED! 100% power is back! I replaced the drive belt and wa-LAH!!! Sure enough... it was stretched AND glazed (the belt spray could have added to the glaze).

Thanks again to all that responded! This is a great learning forum!

            Fuel stabilizer

Just a thought, glad you got it fixed. The vendor recommends that you use stabilizer when it may sit for a while. I keep this in mine to avoid problems, you probably know this, but thought i would mention it. Like i said glad you machine is running correctly.

When is it good to put stabilizer in? (timeframe)..

Also, for my other 2 stroke toys, will it mix with 2 stroke oil?
                thanks!

StaBil works great if you're storing a machine with gas in it for a period of time.

If you will look at that sight that sixbysix gave, Sta-bil recommends any fuel setting for more than 2 months.

It's not as bad as it seems. That was 7:27am here on the east coast.

According to what i was told about the 20 HP kaw. motors it keeps the valves from becoming stuck as Rock Doctor has mentioned.

Keeping it in my fuel at all times is the way i do it. It will not hurt the performance and it keeps me from forgetting. It is in my opinion cheap insurance. I have had no ill effects and i have ran it since the Avenger was new.

I get the same results, and more, from Seafoam for about half the price per ounce. Less still, in the gallon can!!

Somebody earlier mentioned adding ATF (I assume Auto Transmission Fluid) to the gas... Never heard of this. What is the benefit?
