This is my first time starting a discussion on this website. I have what I was told by the Argo company based on the serial number is a 1972 Argo 6x6. It has a Kohler K3992ST 2cycle engine. This was given to me by my best friends family. It has has not run in probably a little over 20 years. The engine did run the last time it was used. A chain link had broke on the main drive chain and they just never fixed it. It then it sat in their barn for years where several tires, and the belt dry rotted. It was never really maintained because it was at there place up north so it was a kind of go up for the weekend play with the toys but no time to maintain kind of thing.
I have had it for 2 or 3 years now but just recently started working on it. I did recently start a discussion on a vintage sled website about the Walbro WR-1 carburetor that is on it and talked a little about the clutches. I have spent a lot of time just trying to get everything cleaned up as good as I can. It already looks completely different then when I initially got it.
Currently I have the engine and tras removed. I had an incredibly hard time removing the driven clutch until I finally bought the correct tool from Richard's Relics. It was already not in great shape and was further damaged by my attempts to remove it before buying the tool. I was in the process of making a tool to remove my primary when my buddy stopped by and said let's just try the water trick. He said "it can't hurt to try". Unfortunately it worked but popped of so violently that it shot up into the air fell to the ground and broke. That clutch was in good condition. Still trying to get over that one. I bought a new Comet primary that looks completely different than the original, a NOS Salsbury Comet driven clutch that looks almost the same as the original, and a new belt that seems to match size wise accept that the one that was on it previously seemed thicker. These were also purchased from Richard's Relics. I was told these would work for me. Sure hope so because I am not yet at a point where they could actually be tried yet.
As far as the engine goes the only place I have seen this exact model number listed anywhere on the internet has been on this website. I have been just trying to clean the exterior of the engine up without disassembling anymore than I have to. I have removed all of the engine cover pieces, the large front aluminum face, the pull start housing, the exhaust, and the intake and carb. I am trying to clean it up as good as I can without disassembling any further than this.
All of the parts, manuals, etc. that I have found on the internet are listed for K399-2, K399-2T, K399-2T FC/2. I cannot find anything listed for K399-2ST. Looking at the manuals that I have found for K399-2 and K399-2T everything for the most part seems to look visually the same accept for maybe the intake. I bought what is suppose to be a complete gasket kit off amazon Winderosa K399-2T FC/2. The exhaust gaskets seem like they may work but not quite an exact fit. The intake gaskets seem like they are not going to work. There is a spacer that goes between the engine and the intake that had a gasket on each side of it. The gaskets that come with it do not look like they would work with these spacers. I think the other gaskets may possibly work for the rest of the engine but I am not sure so I don't know if I should try and return this set or not.
If anyone else has this engine or has had it and could please tell me anything that you have found out about compatibility of parts with these other engine models I have listed. Especially gaskets or what you may have done if you ran into these type problems yourself I would really appreciate it. I have seen people say in other discussions to just swap this engine for a 4 cycle but that it not something I am interested in doing at this time.
I also am trying to figure out what type of chain, and bearings I should purchase. I have determined that the majority of the chains are single #50, and the 2 in the fro t are single #40. However when I look online it appears that there are several types of each of these and a bunch of different brands. Standard, heavy, o-ring, and some other stuff as well. I have seen from about $20 for 10ft. Of #50 to well over $100 for 10 ft. Of #50. So I would also really appreciate advice on this. Please be as specific as you can. I have seen people recommending brands but most were much older posts and they didn't necessarily tell you the specific type to get of that brand.
As far as bearings I don't think whatever is in it now would be able to be greased or anything like that. Not sure if it would be possible to upgrade them in a way that you could without completely replacing axles and stuff like that. I do think that one of the axles may have been replaced at some time because it looks thicker than all of the others and the gear that is on it slides back and forth where all of the other gears in it are welded on. If anyone can tell me more about the bearings from this year of argo that would also be very much appreciated.
I really appreciate any help anyone can give. Also I have taken pics of everything so if anyone would like to see something specific please let me know and I will try to add 20191209_013253.jpg20191213_210831.jpg20191226_200935.jpg20191226_232525.jpg20191230_161106.jpg
