  • More Power (Bigger Motor) for the Argo

I have a newer Argo Conquest 8x8. About a month ago, I thought the motor was bad and was considering replacing the 20 HP motor with a 29 HP motor. I later found out my motor just lost a push-rod to a valve. I have that repaired now.

Anyways, I am still considering replacing the stock 4-cycle 2-piston kawasaki 20 horse power motor with something with more get-up-and-go. I do not want to tear up the drive train or perform major modifications to make the motor fit in.

So my question is... Has anybody replaced the motor in a newer model Argo Conquest with something bigger? Is there anything that is simply unbolt - remove the kawasaki 20 hp motor - set in the newer larger motor - bolt up - then drive away?

The next member who talks to Jon Hoath, ask him who had the conquest with a 29 hp kawasaki upgrade.

        Thank you for the info.
By "A 29 will bolt up", am I correct in assuming there is no fabrication needed to make anything fit (outside of the throttle cable and choke). Just remove the old motor and bolt in the 29 HP motor...

I know there are several models/part #s of the kawasaki-29 HP motors. I would like to ask if you know the model # and who may be selling it.

I still want to put a 29 HP motor in, providing the drive train can handle the extra 9HP when full throttle.

I dont plan on driving full throttle and beating the heck out of it - but it would be great to have the 29 HP in an 8x8 Argo Conquest with supertracks on - and climbing a steep hill - and carrying 4 people with gear - and in deep snow/slush. Right now, I sometimes have to lightly throttle to the point where the pully engages and no more or else the expanding pully will gear up to a higher ratio - then I am really working the 20 HP motor just to move at all.

I think the Model # is FD791D-S01 but you may want to double check. I would be interested in hearing how it turns out. I thought about doing the same thing to my Conquest.

No one here has seen this 29 conquest. Cougar and I were on a group ride when a guy mentioned he had seen one. I want to say it was an RI factory guy, but that makes no sense now . Maybe it was an Argo factory guy. I know that at least the air cleaner had to be fabbed, as it was taller. I can't imagine the swap being a drop in replacement with everything bolting up. But a larger kaw engine was swapped in with great results.

I wouldn't worry about the trans at 30 hp, I have a briggs doing that now.

"Right now, I sometimes have to lightly throttle to the point where the pully engages and no more or else the expanding pully will gear up to a higher ratio - then I am really working the 20 HP motor just to move at all."

I would do the clutch mods Rock Doctor did to his conquest after getting taller frontier tires. Shimming the spring on the engine clutch, and checking the spring index position on the trans clutch. That will allow a higher engagement and operating rpm without it gearing up so quickly.

bigger motor in argo conquest with clutch mods

A clutch mod sounds like a good idea - also. I have been considering doing something to the spring (or springs) to help keep it in a lower ratio at slightly higher rpms.
