    re:old argo

e-mail Wendy Smith at wsmith@odg.com. She is the marketing co-ordinator and will answer all questions. I stopped in at the plant on my way home from TO. and she kindly provided me with a free CD 673-00 service manual 1977-1986.

Well, I woke up this evening, "I work nights" and just had to go tinker for a fw minutes, So I pulled and pulled till it ran. Revved it a bit and filld he whole garage with smoke . But I dropped it into reverse and off I went. Putted around the yard a bit was heading back to the garage and it stalled. I pulled a few times and it wouldn't start then the rope got stuck out. So I pushed it back up into th garage (What do thse things weigh?

So I am guessing to fix this I will need to pull the engine? Or at least pull he body?

Thanks for the info BTW, I will contact her and see what info I can get!!

Well, I got a reply from Wendy at ODG and she informed me that it was a 1979. And sent me a parts manual PDF. Hopefully this weekend I will get the tub opened up and start cleaning it up. I Will likely start a work log post to keep everyone updated on the progress!!

          re:opening up!!!

I was going to do some minor repairs on my new toy -82 6x6 and go for a run.Yeah right!!!!! I drilled out all the rivets, split it apart....the frame is on sawhorses, new axles are made, new bearings, chain, and the frame welded where it had cracked at the floor panel hold down bolts. I split the tranny, replaced two bearings for the input shaft and now am patiently waiting for the guy to come and weld the plastic,no wonder the guy I bought it from said he (a lawyer..go figure) thought the seals were out of the axles and that's why it took on water. They were, but that's not where the water was coming from. It was the two big holes someone had patched...not very well. So the moral of this story is ,don't be surprised at what you find. While it is apart take a deep breath, shed a couple of tears, and fix it right the first time.

              UPDATE

OK, So I drilled all the rivets out today and split the body open. Wow everything seems much less daunting all of a sudden. I can see/get to most everything. I pulled the starter out. hooked it up to my battery charger and it didn't even spin. And the noise I heard that I thought was the starter kicking out was only the solenoid clicking .

So I have the starter in my hands now and I'll stop by a local place tomorrow and see if it can be rebuilt cheaply enough. As for the pull start that the rope is hanging out of, anyone got any ideas? Will the part unbolt from the engine separately? Someone told me it likely would and I could take it to a small engine repair shop and have them repair/rewind/replace the spring

                Test Run

So today, I put the starter back in and fired it up. Started pretty easy but idles rough and stalls, I thought maybe a little running around might help. So I went putting around the yard until I spotted a turkey and thought maybe I would hav a little fun So after chasing a turkey I continued to the top of the hill and while siting idling it stalled. I turned the key and nothing.... oh heck... I just had the starter rebuilt. So I opened it up and started inspecting. Turns out I have a major wiring issue. I melted the negative post right off the battery !! I was able to touch it to the battery to start it and limp home. So I think I am going to start from scratch and rewire the whole thing. Any suggestions? Any wiring diagrams? It's h K440 AMS. I figure I ill wire up the bare essentials and make sure it all works then worry about lights and stuff... Also I am wondering if I have the right belt. There seems to be a lot of travel on the centrifugal clutch before it catches... And at low speeds it smokes the belt. (Is that normal)? I am going to post some pictures up of the damage and the belt. Also, Should this engine have a cooling fan on it? I see what looks like a path for air to pass through but there is no fan on it. should I add one?

Well, Pictures up, Also I was wondering about the belt. Doest that look right to everyone? Size wise I mean? Next time I am out working on it I will be hosing it all down with engine degreaser and pressuring washing the entire engine/belts. Then greasing all of the chains. I will get some good before and after shots.

                THANKS!!
BTW I love all the info available in this forum!!!

                    Wireing

Hi Humanshield. Just wondering if you had gotten in touch with Wendy Smith and if she had provided you with a manual yet. I seen your pictures and recommend a complete new harness after you get everything cleaned up good. Some of the wire shown has corrosion inside the shielding and that can mean a loss of connection inside the insulation itself. Recomend 10-14ga with heat shrink insulator or wrap and sealed connectors. Poss #1-4 for main power.

I seen where Wendy sent you a pdf file. Great!!!

Interesting, so would it be safe to assume mine has been swapped? It currently has the K440 2AMS 2 stroke. Runs fairly smooth, needs cleaned up real good, and as you cans ee the wiring is a mess. I currently have it running with just the switch and starter hooked up. No lights/charging system. What would be awesome is some decent pictures of your winch mount system!! Is it custom? I have plans for a winch to operate a snowplow, I have some ideas for mounts on this unit for a snowplow, do you have that option perchance or know a good way to do so?

humansheild.. the way your belt is sitting in the clutch is just about exactly how mine is. i was wondering the same thing. belt is not centered between two sheaves it kinda looks outta place.
