Ken has a Pinto engine is a Max. Look at the Ashtabula tread. Ran good. He may be able to give you some tips. That should make for a very interesting project!!
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

I don't see any reason why any small engine coudn't be installed.

so far I have seen 1 TerraJet with a vintage Mini engine and 2 with the suzuki 3 cylinder 1000cc engine out of the Sprint/firefly econobox.

My call would be to use a big motorcycle engine with it's transmission.

If I remember right, didn't someone put a 3 cyl. Geo Metro (equiv.) motor in a Max II?

If it's do-able, someone on this sight has done it or will do it!!! That's what I like about these folks. No limits means "NO LIMITS"!!!!!
It's all just nuts and bolts.

If I were doing any R&D work at all in to alternate engines, I would focus all my energy on a small reliable diesel.

Shanna/KevinGriffin built a Max II with a Pinto engine.

                      diesel engines are HEAVY

the 190 pounds Kohler K582 23hp 950cc is already too heavy on the nose of my 8x8.

Whats the most HP a stock Argo or Max chassis can handle, and still be reliable?

                            ???

Good question? Roger S has a hopped up Briggs in his. Mienfield has a 33Hp in a Huster. Whipper has a 50 Hp in an Attex. See no reason except for engine compartment restrictions. Water cooled would work better. One thing to watch for is front-end weight. The nose of the machine rides low with the bigger engines. Just my opinion.

Kevin and shannon Griffin have a maxII with a ford pinto engine in it and it ripps. Shannon raced it at ashtubula and she isnt afraid to drive it like a rental. So fast.
