      I thought I heard about someone putting in a rotax 503 52hp motor??? I wonder what a 64hp 582 would be like...
Although I,d prefer a four stroke.

I have a Rotax 503 in my Attex Racer. Hydromike also has a 503 in his Attex Racer and techfx has one in his Max II

good suggestions, any 2,3 or 4 cylinders 2 strokes snowmobile engine will fit and be lightweight and the power curve will be easy on the drivetrain but not very "work" oriented. (you can get vmax-4 snowmobiles for a handful of peanuts and same goes for the polaris tripples.) if wou ride fire roads or sand dunes in the desert it would be perfect. Not sure it will do fine at low rpm in the woods or swamps. ONE very good point in the swamp : the nice blue 2 strokes smoke will keep the flies away !

another suggestion would be a polaris 4 strokes ATV engine. it's already built to have a CVT clutch and no transmission on the engine. cheaper than a new AATV engine*but not sure about the power output.

What about the Kawasaki FD791D, like in the max iv. They seem to be self-contained motors, fan/radiator/muffler etc... 29 hp & efi...

Just to chime in about engines and weight....

I have a Kubota WG750(3 cylinder 750cc gas) engine in my Attex eight wheeler, which weighs in at 136lbs. I have a Kohler CH26 (V-twin 750cc gas) EFI in my Attex Chief, which weighs 94lbs. In my opinion, these are still pretty light engines. A Kubota D905 diesel weighs in at about 200 pounds, which may be heavy, but still not in the unusable range. If you place the engine in the right location to maintain a nice, low center of gravity, and not too far forward or backward to throw off how it handles up and down hill, and in the water, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. I imagine that the Pinto or Firefly/Geo engines way over 200 pounds, but looking at the way Shanna drove it in Ashtabula, I'd say it's still a pretty stable machine.

By comparison, the 503 Rotax weighs in at about 75 pounds with the muffler and twin carb setup. The 440 Cuyuna/ JLO weights a little less than 70.

Too much power/ too much weight rarely become the first issue to arise when doing an engine swap. The biggest issue, is really room. I think that one of the most critical dimensions is the drive belt centerline to the starboard side of the machine's inner body. But it's pretty easy to cut and bend plastic, so I guess we have to refer to the adage that "there's no substitute for cubic inches"....

                  re car motor

i would rather a diesel but there heavy and hard to find.this argo had a 20 hp onan .i hate belt drive its a poor substitute for gears .11 forward and 6 reverses no slips and forward motion on idle quiet and liquid cooled.it has a better low power curve .live hydraulics and killer alternator better dispersal of weight. tell me whats not to like! the biggest problem i have had was removing gears off the axles i swear they are heat fitted!

that early Geo engine is pretty light.. don't remember the weight. It is long and tall, compared to a twin. Seems like a good max swap.

Diesel engines are the way to go. Lots of torque, direct injection, low fuel usage, etc. They may be a bit louder than gas motors, but a good muffler system can make them acceptable on an atv. As far as weight is concerned, they are a bit heavier than gas. Check out this site: A1biofuel.net. They have some interesting products, good weight (for diesels) and excellent pricing. The motors are fairly tall and wide, maybe a potential for the larger machines.

the geo 3 cyl is verry light only 25-30 lbs more than my 25 kohler including the radiator! lots of alunium makes it light and its supriseingly narrow with 58-60 hp depending on the year and induction (carb or efi) also its used quite a bit in ultra light aircraft lots of parts and kits avaiable..... hummm almost seems like im scheeming something.........
they dont call me mad because im angry!!!!! im just a little crazy thats all!!!!
