some dealers think this new tranny will desolate all other type amphibs and put max in the dark..what do you guys think.

If Argo can keep the price down and transfere this Technology down to the 6x6 frontier Max is through! Water proof bearings, heavy duty axles, automatic chain adjusters,counter rotational ability,fast water speed,true all wheel drive with a high and low range, less maintainance and more reliabilty. Bye, Bye Max.

I agree that the prices for the Argos are too high for the average "Joe" but what average guy wants an Argo? Most will take an atv over a aatv due to speed, looks, price, parts availability. the guy who really wants an Argo isn't really concerned with speed etc. I want something that is going to last 20 years even if it does cost a little more to keep it up. i want to be able to get my buddy, our hunting gear and a good size buck back out the swamp on a cold snowy night in one run. It may be a little slower but it is done one trip. The guy who beats the crap out ANY piece of equipment will pay in the end...and a lot more. If price or cost is a big factor in a purchase,and it should play a part, then go for the less expensive but be prepared for disapointment should it not do what you want. I am not promoting or denouncing anybody's machines, I currently own an older Argo, which I have more fun fixing up than actually riding which I also enjoy. I don't want to spend the money on a new Argo, even if they were $5000.00 but many do. So if you want basic reliability, something you can fix in the middle of the bush, something that will haul people and loads, something you can put tracks on and use all year long and with some care and concern,a machine that will last 20 years, maybe an Argo at 20 grand ain't so bad. Just my thought.

Andylmusic76 - I agree with you on prices. I have no idea what kind of money Max, Argo or Muddox makes as a profit but I do know that if it not 25% or better they won't be in business long. Everyone including myself sometimes, is quick to point out the high cost because we compare them to other ATV's. What we don't take into consideration is the cost to develop, manufacture and produce these machines.

If you compare any of the leading 4 wheel ATV's to an Argo for instance you see more moving parts and more complex designs ect in the 4x4 ATV which can be had for as low as $5k up to $12k so why the higher cost for the Argo, Mudd-Ox or Max? One would think the simpler design of the Argo should cost less.

Polaris, Honda, Can-Am all sell hundreds of thousands of machines. As a result their production costs are lower, parts cheaper in bulk ect. Look at Recreatives Industries. The Max really hasn't changed in many years when compared to an Argo. This is why a Max can be had for much less then an Argo - they aren't trying to re-design and don't have the costs associated with a re-design, tooling processes changes ect.

If Mudd-Ox or Argo prices were closer to even high end quads in the $10k range the factories still wouldn't sell enough to make a true profit and stay in business. They just aren't as popular as Quads or UTV's. Quads and UTV's (side-by-sides) are everywhere and can be financed with zero down and $69 per month.

I think this would be fantastic if a company like ODG built a 6x6 like this. 23 hp , Briggs motor, 24 inch Fronteer tires on bead lock rims , O-ring 50 chain , suspended seat like a Hoot , and a tub similar to a Hoot, narrow like a Hoot, a rack on the back , and at least 9 inches of ground clearance.


This would be perfect for hunters that need a narrow , amphibious , 6x6 in the bush ,or for a person who does not care to carry other people with them. I think that this would be a perfect entry level 6x6.

The New Argo HDi 8x8 Has The Following Features:

1. Apache Transmission: 2 Speed (Low/High), When Handlebar is moved to lock position (In Low Only) the tires will automatically counter-rotate. Steering effort is like power steering on your Automobile, effortless. Shifting from Low to High has a type of synchromesh, that will engage automatically when the rpm is correct. The 2 output shafts are positioned very low and extend out to the sides of the frame, where support bearings are located, from there, it's double 50 to the front shaft. This transmission is mounted in the frame very low and independent from the motor (31 hp efi).

It also has 2 hydraulic caliper/rotors located on the output shaft close to the transmission. This transmission 35% more efficient than a comparable Hydrostatic type. No more power loss when turning! This is a patented design. I am speculating that it must have some sort of Dual Planetary Gear set, that does the counter-rotating, how it is automatically initiated is a mystery to me.

2. It has hydraulically operated hand lever operated brakes (no adjustments required)

2. It has a new hood design that has a forward facing scoop, and small side screens. Under the scoop is 2 large screened ventilation areas. It also still maintains the standard side screens. I wonder if the scoop will along water to enter the engine compartment doing steep water entries?

3. The axles have been increased to 1 3/8", with a new triple sealed bearing mounted in a "special" 4 hole pattern to match existing Avengers to allow for future retro-fits. The bearing mount looks like cast iron. The bearing flange has one grease fitting that can be greased via a matching hole in the rim.

4. New water proof sealed switches, with room for expansion in the new panel.

5. Digital Tach

The rest of the 8x8 looks like stock Avenger EFI. The automatic counter-rotating feature is pretty slick, doing a perfect tight doughnut. They are available in limited numbers up to November/09. Price is in the $19,500 range I've heard. Speed are pretty much the same as the Avenger.

Sounds like it is a spin off of the Centaur Hydrostatic Trans.(Counter Rotating Drivetrain).Also sounds like it is going to be so highpriced you had better NEED this much machine,outfitters,utilities companys,etc.I dont think it will be something for the average Joe. Eddie
