  • 24" Frontiers on a Conquest (pix)

    Well it's done.....Finally.
The 24" Frontiers are a real hit. They fit, they climb, they swimm, they are SELF CLEANING, They look COOL

So like I said, a buddy came and took my new tires, put them on his Argo and tried them out......He won't give them back, he said he has already ordered me a replacement set + rims.

He has tried quite a few different tires on his Argos over the last 20 yrs, and he said NONE of them would climb like these!!!

He went swimming and said that "They are amaizing, they are fast and at full clutch engagement, will lift the front of the Argo about 4" up out of the water" (not thrust, lift) Anyway, MUCH faster than stock.

By GPS it looks like he gained about 2-3 mph, and he said that there was NO noticible difference in power.

He took them into some sticky mud, and said that they are very good at cleaning each other. At some points his tires were about 16" wide (exageration, I'm sure), but the mud could not build up on the tire faces and never "Plugged up" between the tires and fenders.

He ran 2.5psi air pressure all day, through swamps, rocks, creeks, over logs. Aperently they are working very well for crossing logs, being as close togeather as they are.

Schweet! Thanks for pioneering the project. You guys will be like kids with new toys. I like the "lift" in the water, that'll make climbing out of holes easier. They will swim good in reverse too, unlike the runamuks.

        Waiting on a video Doc

Okay Doc you got the tires now lets see how they perform. Take those conqest out and match them up with you friends new Avenger. I'll bet you'll give him cats fits. I have seen videos of the frontier swimming with those tires and I couldn't believe how fast it was! I bet we see you going through the middle of those litle ponds a lot more in the future. Enjoy and share with us!

I'll do my best to get them back from my buddy, when I get home from work (next week). The snow has melted around here quite a bit in the last few days, so I will tear off my tracks and put the 24's on. Might have a little trouble finding open water or mud to play in, the snow is melting during the day but there is still alot of ICE around here. I was driving across Beaver Ponds yesterday with my tracks on (Yes, I have my Argo out at work with me, the company I work for even provides a trailer for me to haul it on)

The Avenger is a very impressive machine, and my friend that has one is a pretty big guy. It's not a matter of "can I drive circles around him and laugh about it", it's more a matter of "should I"
Seriously though, I am looking forward to putting the machine through it's paces, but I fear that it's too late for me to really get into it. This part of the Country is pretty much locked in ice now, and will be for about the next 7 months.

SO, with the new tires do you think your conquest is as good/almost as good/or still alittle less of a machine than the new avenger........I gotta know because I am buying one right away but that avenger aint cheap and if i can get a good used conquest, put 24s on it and have nearly the same thing as an avenger, that would be sweet.........

In all honesty, I will have to say that a Conquest will never be an Avenger. The power and clearance are just not there, However, I will go so far as to say that there are not too many things that an Avenger will do that a Conquest won't.
More testing is required, but unfortunatly that is going to have to wait.
Personally, I would not hesitate to get another Conquest, but for me the maintenance is easy and the parts come cheap.

Good to see some one else get some real world experience with the new tires. You've come to the same conclusion that I did - they are the all around best amphibious ATV tire available to us today.
The half-bald 22" Runamuks have always been the biggest downfall of previous Argo models like the Conquest, Response, and Vanguard. You have a much better vehicle if you do a simple tire upgrade. However, Conquest VS. Avenger is no comparison. The Avenger's performance is a huge change over all previous Argos. Many factors make this happen. 25" tires, better lower body design, bigger engine, and better transmission are the major improvements.

What is the difference in the transmission? Are they not both CVT? Is it gearing?

                    Dereckf ,

From what I understand,,both old and new models , still use the same cvt , but the newer models now have a slightly different gearing , so you hardly have to use low gear . With the new handle bar stearing , plus the new trans ratio , this combo acts more like a true 6 wheel drive, even though its still a limited slips trans.

The transmissions are both a similar design, each using a CVT belt drive and open differential. The new trans is so much more efficient on power. It must be better gearing, better drive clutches (CVT), or both. Steering power loss is minimal compared to the older trans. The new trans also runs silent (no gear whine) and has a better shifter. It also has larger vented disc brakes that make steering easier. They are also not using a brake cooling fan on the 6x6 models because they cool so much better than the old brakes. Just drive a vehicle with each type of trans and it's easy to feel the difference.

I like the added clearence the 24" Frontiers would give but would sticking with the 22" rawhidelll's with the large lugs be just as good? I emailed the dealer here to get a price.

Thank you for posting the frontier tires

This helps my dissection on getting a set. I thought they are priced a bit high but I was just quoted $139ea cnd for the Goodyear Runamuks so $126ea doesn’t seem so bad.

I am sure if I looked around a bit more I could get a better price on the good years but if there not as good why bother.

Is slip differential transmission really a big deal if you can independently brake the right and left side?

If so I will ad a ratcheting system to my planetary gears

Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

Anyone have any new data on their (24" Frontier tires on a Conquest) performance. I'm thinking more ground clearance with the 24" Frontier tires, would be better then the larger lugs on the 22" rawhide lll's I have.
I have a 2000 Conquest & a 2005 Avenger. The Avenger is smoother, quieter, floats better, more clearance, and I can drive one handed, but the Conquest follows it almost everywhere. The biggest performance difference I see is in ruts, & mud the higher ground clearance is apparent.

The dealer here said no 24" tires would not fit on a conquest I've seen some charsile on a Response & now these.
