  • oil transmission

Hi, I changed the oil transmission in my argo avenger (2005). In the manuel they say to put castrol hypoy C 80W90. I did not have it in hand but I had another brand 80W90 but it doesn't say hypoy C on it. Does that make any difference or is it just because argo has a deal with castrol since they often suggest castrol.

    Hi.
Hypoy C is just a brand name from Castrol. Any good quality 80 W 90 gear oil is acceptable.

You say it is acceptable but is it better with castrol Hypoy C.

I add about 15 squirts from a grease gun of synthetic grease to the transmission oil.
On my conquest the top shaft on the transmission doesn't get any lubrication if it idles in neutral. I think the grease and oil mix will stay on the shaft longer and I try not to idle it very long. So far no problem.

          Hey slim,
The bearings on the top shaft are sealed, and don't get any oil anyway.

I use 80/90 oil, and add some " limited slip diff additive ".
A couple friends of mine use synthetic 120 weight gear oil.
Either seems to be working for us, so far.

I didn't know that. I was told the top shaft didn't get any lube when it was idling. I haven't had one apart yet.
